Oil questions...

… I’ve been using the Stihl ultra for over 25 years now. Buck over 100/face per years plus treework. Everything runs well and engine is clean as a whistle. Are there better mix oils out there? Perhaps , I don’t see a reason to change my ways at this stage of the game tho … I guess ya just pick an oil/ratio and stick with it right?

Just about any aircooled oil is better snd cheaper than Ultra.
You want to waste money on low quality, yet high priced crap, have at it.

Just curious as to why you believe ultra is overpriced low quality and what mix oil do you run in your saws?

I feel like there is a deep hate for Ultra, I have no experience with it personally but just read negative on it.

I’ve been running it for 25 years without issue but am Very meticulous with maintenance and sharp chains … to each his own !

After a recent tear down and scraping out the massive carbon build up in the exhaust port on a 30'ish year old Stihl FS(?)76(several carb kits and multiple primer bulbs later) originally running on on Stihl HP Ultra at 50/1 and currently running at a 40/1 ratio Stihl Ultra HP, now being used as a part time pole saw, I am shocked the power head was still running. Recent tear down just for maintence/curiousity was shocking.

Dad's old weed eater I switched to a weak pole saw with the Kombi-power head. The build up in the exhaust port was surprising(massive) to say the least. Scraped out the carbon build-up and still running for now. I am going to try Echo Red Armor

Stihl Ultra HP is not a carbon free or low carbon build-up oil to say the least

I do not believe there is any mix oil that isn’t going to produce carbon in the exhaust port after 30 years. It’s a 2-stroke , it produces carbon. That being said imho the fuel itself can contribute to carbon build up. Regional differences in fuel may account for one gent carboning up in a season while another gets 10x that …

Could be Stihl Ulta HP is a "FB" rated oil. The current standard is "FD". We have moved up two grades since Stihl Ultra HP was a "state-of-the-art" two stroke air cooled oil. Made for the "Four-Mix" engine technology, I get.

But most of my two strokes are not "Four-Mix".

Most of my current two stoke engines are 13k to 14k RPM(factory rated max) engines

While true, after multiple two stroke engines(dirt bikes, four wheelers, sea does and more than a few OPE's} I have never seen as much carbon build up. And yes, some of those engines have seen very high hours, high use with reguglar maintenience.

30 years? No. But a comparable or simular use schedule for the number of hours? Silimiar if not equal. I have not seen so much build up as with Stihl Ultra HP.

Use what you wish. I have no skin in your game

Dominator, Saber, K2, Motul 710, Castrol Go are all very clean burning. I haven’t seen any buildup inside the exhaust port of a saw running any of those oils. I have seen some from red armor, but only on the floor of a 5 series husky that is sloped heavily downhill and probably out of the wash pattern so it doesn’t stay clean

The difference in lubricity between FB and FD oils is non-existent. The FD oils produce less smoke/carbon, I will give you that. Imho … ALL modern mix oil(s) will do the job satisfactorily… pick one and go cut wood

Saber smells pretty good. 710 also smells good. Dominator doesn’t really smell at all

I haven't had to clean a spark arrestor screen since switching from ultra 50:1 to Dominator 40:1 been a few years now.

Actually I can't remember ever cleaning a spark screen .The fact I don't think I have any might have something to do with that .
