Often the dangerous stuff isn't real obvious, like a piece of wood with a big split in it that closes up when you put it in the splitter.
Had something like that happen to me a few weeks ago when I was splitting some Sugar Maple. Luckily, I was wearing gloves, and I just started to feel it and I yanked my hand out. The finger of the glove tore completely off, but my hand did not have a scratch. I have heard some people ridicule me for wearing gloves, I don't care, they can save you or at least reduce the damage sometimes (like when you pinch between two pieces).
