I understand the 500i has been out for awhile now but I'd like it to see some more time in the field before I get one. The primer bulb does turn me off a bit, but I do realize it's necessity. Already have a 461 in the fleet so....the 462 is next.
Did I mention I'm a junkie?
I only use the primer if I run out of gas, which I try not to do. Otherwise, the saw usually starts on the second pull every morning, and on one the rest of the day. I have a 562 that is fairly old, and haven’t had any issues with the primer. I do use non-ethanol gas.
I am at my lowest saw count at the moment. I’ve sold a lot of my used saws in the past few months. I do a fair amount of saw buying, using, and selling. Lol.

I definitely agree with what you are saying about the fuel economy and whatnot.
Most fallers here are paid by the hour. So we don’t go home earlier if you cut more. Some guys get paid by the ton or thousand board foot, and then it’s a busheling game with a total different mindset for some. As has been said, fuel economy and efficiency are two different things. I personally want to be as productive as can be, while providing a high quality job. Let’s say that if I have to fuel up every 30 minutes with a 500i, perhaps I’d get more done overall with a 461 that goes for 50 minutes. Or maybe the 500i gets more done to make up for it, also while being lighter. That’s for everybody to decide for themself. But something I think about quite a bit.
And I would say the same theory would apply to ported saws as well. And of course, you should run what you enjoy as well. It’s not all business, eh.

Clearcut I have had the same experience when it comes to starting, if you use the saw every day there has been no need to hit the primer. I even started the 500i without priming after the saw sat two weeks, took seven pulls to fire and run. I'll add that I'm not a big fan of primers, especially the remote mounted ones, the ones mounted of the carb itself, are super easy to change out.

The other day falling limbing and bucking with my 500 I burned one tank shy of a gallon in 2.5 hrs...
That's not easy to do with a 462, I never have...
When running my 462 I can get almost 5 hrs on a gallon.
Did you put more wood on the ground with a gallon used on the 500i vs a gallon used with a 462?

Maybe hard to tell without keeping track of my scale. There were some poles mixed with stuff I needed to reach way around to get the far corner with a 32....
I wish that the 500i had a wrap handle like a 7900. A lot more angled forward on the clutch side. It sure would balance better when running 32in plus bars.

This thread is a good debate, and neither saw is the clear winner or looser, they each have their strengths.

It is good they are both available so folks can choose based on their circumstances.

To me, the 462 looks like a great replacement for a 044/440-372, and the

500i looks like a great replacement for the 460, 461, 700/7901, and 064.

To be fair, I googled to make sure Thanksgiving is in November for all Americans. The story of John and Thanksgiving aren't that different.
