I can’t see the diverters helping with lube.

The whole chamber beneath the piston is stuffed with nothing but several types of gases, refined crude oil, an up and down toilet plunger and a spinning mixer.

The bearings should have plenty of lube with no issues.

I have a September 2020. It would suck if I need a new cylinder down the road and the new available won’t fit my saw. Another reason I’ll keep my 461. I always liked the “0” series stihl cause they had something good and was basically the same for 20 plus years

I'm sure both top ends will be available for some time. They made a lot of 462s before this revision.

Not much help, but could the new piston be cut to fit an older style case,
probably not given the band around the cutout on the older one can't be replicated.
I like the newer design, longer skirt might help with balance and anti wear, holding onto more oil residue.

From the pics, I assume one could use the spinny thing to grind the cut out to make new slugs and jugs fit old cases?

I believe you are correct. It would mean a case split to do it well, but that ain't no big deal.

Grinding the piston and jug seems possible as well.

Maybe so. But I think the difference in height of the intake port would make that a no go. Once you altered the piston to clear the case on the old style, the intake duration would be way off.

I think this is a good thing, Stihl have had that saw out long enough to know it's soft points. Having to list 2 cylinders for the one model is annoying so they obviously thought these updates are worthwhile. Stihl are good like that.

I stopped by the STIHL booth at the MN State Fair today, and spoke to one of the regional reps. He said that he did not know anything about it, even when I showed him the photos from this thread.

He did want to talk about the 500 and 400 models saws.
