Are you talking for the 400.0 or .1? Just curious as i have run a 400.0 several times and was not impressed at all... yeah it piss revs, but in the cut felt like just a hair more power than my ms362... i wouldnt put it anywhere near 044 territory, but my 044 has the lower transfers opened up a hair, no port time changes though, just smoothed transition on the lowers and widened the intake and exhaust a hair... you say 044 and i think tractor like tq that pulls an 8 pin with minimal bog... the 400 i ran was as peaky orslightly worse than my 362... drop it 50rpm out of the power band and it fell on its face.... heres a vid of my 2 saws, you can see theres a vast difference between them...LOL
I’ll just leave this here:

Looks very hoosk-farnish! Maybe Hexa chain is not selling that well...
I tried it.
No difference in speed to round filed but it doesn't cut as smooth. The chain vibrates in the cut and kicks back very easily.
It's also hard to sharpen right, the files are dear and a raker gauge won't fit down over the rakers properly because of their shape.

So in stock form, roughly 1.5hp less than an 044... cool to see the numbers side by side like that... they do really open up with porting, those are some good ported numbers....

I’m not sure where you’re coming up with a stock 044 having 1.5 more hp than a stock 400?

I was talking about the original 400. It’s only 5cc smaller but nearly zero scavenging losses with the charge coming from under the exhaust. It’s more efficient on fuel and just a more efficient transfer port design

They’re nice saws. I like the rubber mount stihls for felling and bucking logs, better feel with what’s going on in the cut.
The new spring saws I find I have to listen alot closer and put more twist on the handle when I’m bore cutting.

Having a lot of experience with the 044 and 066 It took me some time to get used to the spring AV of the newer huskies, Stihls, and Dolmars. Now that I have my hands really appreciate it at the end of the day.

It's a bit like a sports car vs luxury car. In a sports car it's easy to feel what you're doing, but it will get tiring on a road trip.

If i had one complaint about my 044 is it drinks fuel about the same rate as my ported 661 🤣 so at least the 400 has that going for it....

I was told on this forum that a 12mm 044 stock for stock wouldn’t best my 400.
I still bought the 044 and I’d agree 100% they’re very close
My 044 is a 10mm slant fin, and with the light port work that i did to the intake, lowers, and exhaust, which were more opening up and smoothing out flow than anything else, it pulls like a freight train, with the dual port stock style muffler, and an 8 pin rim on the clutch.... and i love it....LOL

Dyno Joes video.... i see now that i read it wrong though, i thought the second graph with the 044 was stock vs ported... but it was ported 044 vs ported 400... my bad... after checking the specs, they are both stock rated at 5.4bhp...

I feel like when both are stock the 400c actually has more stump torque than the ms440.

Not the one i ran... it was peaky as hell, like an ms362... my muffler modded 362 had more stump torque than the 400 i ran...

Something must have been wrong with thw saw or the chain set up poorly then because the 400 is nothing like a 362.
The chain was about half sharpened back, but i had just sharpened it, just like i do for all my chains, with a fast hungry hook (rakers about .026-.030" usually, my ms362 is currently wearing about .029" rakers), and the saw had hours on it... maybe too many? I didnt do anything different to that chain over any of mine, was stihl 33rs, just like i run on my saws... so...i dont think the chain was the issue....LOL

Maybe it doesnt like 1700 Janka black loqust is all? My 362 doesnt mind it though... thats what our test log at the shop currently is...

I did some short videos a while back comparing a 440, 400, and 310. All ported and running 20" and 24" bars. It only became somewhat noticeable with the 24" in the bigger wood between the three. The 440 and 400 were close with the 440 being slightly faster. All new Stihl chain too. The biggest difference was how it felt, the 400 seemed higher up the rpm range making power compared to the 440. Oddly enough the 310 wasn't that far off and cut well. It's like towing, every truck will do it, but we all have our favorites.

From the first video: Jens said the new MS400 is based on the previous MS400 but is a redesigned saw--basically the next evolution, not just an improvement. There's less rotating mass which is why it feels like a fuel-injected saw, the handles are redesigned for better balance and anti-vibration, heated handles will be available as an option.

Jens said the main benefit of the STIHL RAPID HEXA(tm) chain is consistent and easy sharpening for the average chainsaw user, and cutter longevity in dirty conditions (including roots) is improved.

---
Regarding MS400 cutting ability (I have an early one from @jk14 and @julie wolf has a 2023 which has several improvements), I find the anti-vibration a bit "springy" though got used to it and it is smooth. It does well for a mid-size saw in Central Wisconsin, which for the most part makes a great all-around saw as it's light enough for brush cutting with a small bar and powerful enough for pulling a 28" bar through most of what we have (or at least what I deal with). The fuel tank is a bit small so it's dry after 30 to 45 minutes of use, faster if constantly bucking "big" stuff (for Wisconsin).

Personally I usually use a smaller saw for limbing and larger for bucking over 14", but if someone were looking to own just one saw that "does it all" I think an MS400 would be a great choice as long as they had the upper body strength to run it comfortably. The auto-tune works great (there are no carb adjustment screws) in the hot/cold/100% humidity/dry conditions I've been in, so with that and HEXA chain it should be a versatile easy to maintain saw.
