I've often thought a 261/400/661 would be an awesome three saw plan for me. Any smaller than the 261 and I'd rather use a battery saw because the job is probably tiny. But I don't climb trees or work up in the air at all.

A real handled 201c is an awesome saw for small work, it's a scalpel.

I use my top handle 201c a lot, I use it at the chipper all the time.

My 3 saw plan (all ported) 261 (18" 3/8); 462 (20/24"); 440/460 Hybrid (28"). I've also got ported 660s and a 661 with bar lengths up to 36", but I don't need them very often except for milling.

Since I use the 462 the most, I like to have an extra one for when the chain gets dull on the first one. That way I just keep going.

I couldnt get rid of a good ported 440 tor a ms400. Never really liked the 362 vant believe the 400 is that much better stock or ported.

A 400 has a measurable amount of power over a 362, I guess you'll just have to run one to see...I can't really see what purpose a 362 will have now other than price, or people that just don't care one way or the other about it.

Whether it fits in what you use is a different subject. I for the most part use a 50cc saw with and 18" bar and a 70ish cc saw with a 28" bar 95% of the time, so a saw that I'd run a 20" bar to me doesn't serve much purpose. It's only gonna cut 2 more inches than what my 261 does..but guys like Dallas say that 2" really makes a difference..to each their own.

Here’s my thoughts from both sides of the counter: As a multiple chainsaw owner and logger, I agree that certain sized saws just don’t “fit” and aren’t necessary.. Now when I was managing a Stihl dealer in my younger days, I can tell you that most of the folks walking through that door were 1 chainsaw type people. Their cutting needs varied, and a lot of the saws we sold were the homeowner catagory saws, and Farm/Ranch models. But there were still the type that wanted the Professional Grade - and they rarely bought a saw above 60cc’s. The 362 was very popular for my dealership back then. However the 462 and 400 weren’t around at that time.. so take it for what it is..

My 2 cents: I personally can’t stand the 362. I’ve run a handful of them in some felling and bucking tasks, and I was disappointed each time. I literally brought my personal 361 to the County 1 day to use in place of a 362... now I’m love with the 462. It took a bit for me to warm up to it, but I reach for it first everytime now. And mine is stock other than a bark box.

In stock or ported form? I have not had a chance to try a 400 yet..
Stock form. Ported is tough to say since a lot depends on who and how the saws were ported.
I’ve ported both saws, I feel both turned out quite good. I didn’t get to compare them back to back but the 400 after porting seemed to stand out a little more to me.

It’s kinda like comparing a 357 to a 359. Both great saws but the 359 has more ass down low and the 357 likes to rev.

Stop over and cut some firewood that is in stick form. You can use my MS400 (ported by thin legged man) and make a comparison. I like how it runs, first Stihl saw I have owned. Have owned many Husqvarna 346's and 357's never understood the hype, would rather run a nice 262 over them. Just an opinion, have owned 257's, 262's, 272's, 346's,357's,365sp,371's,372's,385, 390's,540, 550's,562's,572's, 592, probably a few other boat anchors as some would say.
