mall chain

i got this nos mall chain from a friend its a chipper chain but it has a side link that is also sharpened this side link closes the chipper cutter on the open sidei dont see how this would cut well there is no room for the chips to clear unless they go past both sharp edges has anyone else seen this chain before

this chain is 9/16 pitch .077 gauge mall planer chain near as i can tell
