The maybe 3 spiral grain trees I’ve cut were snags by the time I got to them. It’s an obvious defect that most people don’t want to cut for the price they get at the mill. It seems to be more prevalent in species like Sugar Pine than the species I have that are local to where I am now.

Every one I’ve seen hit the ground, but one, has come apart when it hit the ground.

I’d like to get some thoughts on spiral grain.

Who am I forgetting?

I spose I should post in the forestry and logging thread.
Left or Right hand twist?
A whole thread could be dedicated to grains and what creates what. Like Compression grain that is under a limb and off of the trunk, the grain at the root flares, Grain around a broke then overgrown branch. Riff- quarter - face- edge - grain density - grain run out.

In my example you can see that forward running grain held on longer and rearward running grain broke early.

But after reviewing I don’t know how much was grain and how much was poorly executed overly complicated cutting trying to get wood to bend.

You can see where I nicked the hinge in the circled areas. Yellow side high on the front blue one low on the back. Those nicks contributed to where the hinge broke, and a tilted hinge pulls to the high side. How much was that and how much was twist I don’t know, but I have not had a problem with twist before.

I have read experienced fallers say that a gap face should be broken out, not cut out. That way the fibers that are severed come out with the gob and the ones that are not stay.
