We have big ones out here among the fields in the desert. I posted a pic somewhere the other day of one about 8' in diameter.

Do y'all cut big euc down there, or is that the Aussies?
The second highest tree in NZ is an Eucluptus: https://register.notabletrees.org.nz/tree/view/687 its 236 feet high and measures 24.27 feet in girth at the base. It's about 10 mins drive and then 20mins walk from where I live.

The firewood I am cutting at the moment is large old Eucluptus. Absolutely superb firewood.

I did not know this. I'm gonna have to go check it out!
Is the tallest a kahikatea, or an exotic?

Nope, the tallest is another Tasmanian Mountain Ash at over 80 meters tall down near Dunedin.. Where you based mate? I see you live, like me, on the Mainland.

Indeed. I'm over in Mot.
Are they similar to Blue gum? Got them by the hundreds where I'm living

Both are from the Eucyluptus genus and the layman would probably call them both 'gums' but they are very different to look at, Tasmanian mountain ash grows very very straight and tall.

Largest genus in the world from what I've read.
Just found out recently that jarra is a eucalyptus.
Is there a decent track to the one behind Richmond? Got a 3yo I'll take for a walk up there

Absolutely! Nice easy walk. Go to Easby Park and follow the signs...

I usually have dead dry and it's pretty hard.

Burned some in the outside fire pit the other night and my wife said it was smoky. Old and dry in the desert, so probably not moisture, seems strange.

I remember being told when I was working in Sydney there was about 7 or 8 similar trees that were sold as Tasmanian oak. We had a similar deal here with Miro being sold as Rimu sometimes, it's very close but not identical .

I used to cut up one sort of gum for my parents that started splitting as soon as I cut it, you could actually hear it cracking.
