I love my MMWS 461. Heck, I don’t have a saw that you have touched that I don’t like. I believe one of those may be a friend of mine’s. I am about to fire that bad Mother up and fell some dead oaks out in the campground next week. Glad you are doing good Randy. I need to come visit soon.

Bit of an iconic saw the 461. Having been replaced now with 2 pretty awesome models (500i & MS462) one would presume your bench would be stacked with them. Kinda cool to see all them 461's & says a lot about them. I bet in 3 or 4 years you'd wish you had 11 NOS 461's stashed away under the bench lol. Gotta be the last non-MT rubber AV mount Stihl pro saw sold.

I have one in a box that will not be opened until my son is old enough to handle a bigger saw. Then it will be sent to Randy as long as he is still doing his thing. The way my son is growing, it may be next year, lol. The kid just turned 11 and shot up 4 1/2” since his last birthday!

Sweet thread, I'm guessing the intake is still @80*

what’s the timing advance., I know sometimes more is less in the end ;)

I try to keep the intake 78 - 81

To be honest, on this saw, I just knock the lip off the floor of the intake.

On the timing, I file the key so that its .055" thick.

Not all keys are exactly the same, but most I've checked have been .078, so Randy takes between .020 and .025 off.

IIRC, .020 is approx. 6* on most of these Stihls.

I think it was another 461 build quite a while ago that Randy showed his key mods. I believe he took .020 off back then.

Question to anyone who knows … are 461s any heavier than 460s because of the longer case to bottom feed the cylinder? I think they are pretty close in weight

Also, I know the piston + cylinder are way different on a 461, but is the crank any different?

You can swap recoils, but only 3 of the 4 bolts will line up, but it will work.

461 carbs are also different. They can be swapped, but you have to swap the choke linkage.

Has anyone tried putting a HD-11 carb on a 461 to see if it likes it? Most 460s don't like 461 carbs, but I have one that just loves it, and I don't know why!

Yes they are slightly heavier and it’s mostly because of this casting difference in the case that I noticed. They are very close in weight though. Probably 1/4 pound if I had to guess. 1E387C5A-48F3-49B3-9258-05FE773D92DC.jpeg460 AD6AD735-52BC-4DD8-9449-40F0634C4036.jpeg461

I’m Curious if it’s even that much: I’m thinking 2-3 ounces.

The only two things I can honestly tell a difference with the 461 is that it uses less gas and the sticker has a one instead of a zero. Lol. Guys say there are performance differences... but that probably depends more on how it was ported. Both can be very strong. Just my opinion.

Good thing you’re an accountant and not a mathematician

Never really did much accounting, it was too boring, mostly focused on Auditing (over 30 years and retired as a NYS Audit Manager and Certified Fraud Examiner) and Tax Prep.

Always enjoyed the challenge of trying to catch those who are cheating you, and I found millions almost every year. New Yorkers still save money every year based on one of my audits, which resulted in changes to Medicaid billing to reduce fraud. I found a large fraud that the Medicaid Fraud Auditors missed. Actually, I did that several times.

The rank and file Medicaid Auditors actually requested that I provide them with training … but the upper Management despised me and would not hear of it. Such is how Gov works (or not). However, when they went to court to obtain felony fraud convictions, it was with the information I identified.

Most of the larger audits were in NYC, and commuting 2 hrs each way every day (stuck in traffic) stopped being fun and I retired from NYS while still 55.
