Lots of things, first I’ll get the only 3 things I don’t like out of the way. One small spike and a metal chain catcher... really? And thirdly the primer bulb, it does make it easier to start, especially cold or if you run it out of gas. I just don’t like the added complexity. Just personal preference. The larger set of spikes and roller can be added, so that’s a minor issue. View attachment 177451View attachment 177452 View attachment 177453
Yes to all three. Those primer bulbs bother me too. I had one crack and screw up the saw running and wasted time to figure it out. I do not use them.

572 might not beat a high end build in a cookie cut at a GTG, but I think you would for sure be surprised at how close they would be.

Part of this discussion has to turn on what are we actually comparing here. Mason is testing the 572 and 462 in the context of a logger running these saws all day in the woods. Not in an enthusiast/hobby context. A nicely ported saw is a blast when cutting firewood, but a built 372 with compression approaching 200psi is very likely going to waste the clutch side bearing at some point in full time logger use. Full time cutters run as much fuel through their saws in 2 or 3 days as most of us do in a year. So those saws exist in a little different reality than we usually think of here. The larger bearings in the 572 without making the saw too heavy is a bigger deal than the power it makes.

I do get the power thing, cause we all tweek our saws, or pay someone else to do it. It's so much fun, and that's what drives most of the activity at GTG's. But ported saws have to make some compromises, some good, some not so good. Some of the newer ones run both better and cooler as the builders don't concern themselves with some of the epa driven engineering. But as Husky and Stihl continue to improve this new technology they are coming out of the box way better than early 562's and ms362's did almost 10 (already!) years ago.
Thank you for that post! Learning, due to politics, as a newbie I have to be careful to not post anything seeming anti mod etc. This is a great review.

Here in the East we have mostly hardwoods, and it is very unlikely that an unscreened saw is going to start a fire … unless you opened it up in the front!

Likely, they monitor these things where they need to and don't monitor them where there is no need.
They call Maine the pine tree state. I had a burn permit and called FD once. Fireman said I would have to pay forest service next time. I know they had some monster forest fires here before modern monitoring programs by forest service was set up.

I would add that I ran stihl red container 2 cycle juice with premium fuel in my husky and stihl chainsaws at 50/1 and never adjusted the carburetors in any of my saws, but demanded my ground man to clean the air filter every time my saws were fueled, I never burned a saw up and I still have two saws that run just as strong as the day I got them, one is my 036 That I cut hundreds and hundreds of cords with that I bought brand new in the mid 90s. A clean filter is a must as far as I’m concerned!
Great post. It is the simple things that are overlooked. Keep the fins all blowed out, filter clean etc. My Stihl will be 15 years old on 1/6/22 and running fine. Keep it stored in heated area but other than that regular maintenance.

Couple things the 572xp does better than the 462... AV is smoother, oiler outputs a little more, balances a longer bar better, better chip clearance, better filter seal/setup, I like the chain adjuster setup better, better fuel mileage, a bit more forgiving powerband, stronger cases/bottom end and it’s about 200$ cheaper. Things the 462 does better than the 572xp... better throttle response, more nimble limbing, lighter powerhead weight, well matched to shorter bars, carb box layout is a little more simplified, captive nuts are nicer than the husky’s. There’s a couple more things that I’d list I’m forgetting I’m sure, but that’s most of it. The major thing both of them need to stop cheaping out on is the pathetic stock spikes and a fixed metal catcher (hate those). Dual dogs and a roller standard would be nice on saws of this caliber.
This is an older but very good post. I called two Stihl dealers about 462. First one says unavailable. Second dealer says due to Covid saws from Germany are not available and they have over 400 orders waiting...so now checking out 572xp. I have a very local dealer so probably going to see if they have problems on stocking. No rush ony part..

IMO, even though they are the same displacement, they are very different saws for very different purposes.

The 572 is noticeably heavier (about a pound and a half), balances long bars better, and is the better choice for bucking with longer bars (especially hardwood).

The 462 is a lighter powerhead, has instant throttle response and seems to focus more on speed than torque. If you want more than a 28" light bar it is likely not your best choice. But it you do bucking and liming with the same saw, it is great for it.

It is a shame that America's supply chain currently looks like a 3rd world Country, hopefully it will be resolved soon.

I can count the # of softwoods I cut each year on the fingers of one hand! Not that there are not pockets of them here and there, just not many.

There are some Pines around, but I think I see more Spruce, and I did cut down a Hemlock at the Fish and Game club a few years ago.

Mostly, the evergreens have been planted by homeowners and are not in the woods.

Glad we have lots of evergreens of all types. They look nice with snow on them and the green all year long is sure a lot better to look at than drab hardwoods with no leaves on them. Luckily we have lots of hardwoods too for more green rest of year and beautiful Fall colors.

You summed up my findings on 462 vs 572. The 462 is the one I will wait and see on...usually cutting 24" and under and making them into cookies for firewood The 462 makes a good cookie cutter by any standards. No rush and Stihl has been making improvements on the 462 so it may work out for the best to wait and see.

The 572 is definitely a nice saw...do not like the extra 1.5 lbs but it is a durable saw which I like. I prefer the 462 but would take the 572 if need be. Both saws could do what needed doing but as you say each is better at differing cutting jobs. Meanwhile, cutting some more wood with the old 440.

I don’t really check in here other than maybe once every month or so with a update. Not much to discuss that hasn’t been beaten to death or to share other than I am still using them. Lol5C6275DA-579E-4274-87AC-307F80B09CED.jpeg One of them got a new bar today. I believe that this is its 6th or 7th bar I can’t remember. 74E23FBA-A49A-46B5-A846-A787E3C6FF11.png
