They do good when ported with a 24" bar in Hardwood as well, I have one greg did and one kevin did.

The early 462s were speedy, the newer ones have better torque if the guy porting it knows how to get it.

I traded for one of the 400s I have and the other I bought for someone because I got a better deal and they stuck me with it and never answered my messages...so I figured I'd keep it.

They each serve a purpose...like any saw.
Any issues with the magnesium piston on the 400c?

I would say the oiler on the 400 is undersized for anything over 25"....but I would say they are more than fine for the 20" the OP primarily runs.
Agreed; mine mostly just pulls a 20 in very clean birch and so no issues at all with the oiler. It's of course somewhat disconcerting when you are used to saws going through oil & gas at about the same rate, but from a performance standpoint seems like no oil issues for me.

I’ve honestly never had a saw that was 1:1 gas/oil even the old stuff. Mine all seem to be 1 1/2-2 tanks of gas per oil tank leaning mostly to the 1-1/2 tanks gas.

For your use, if I had to choose between the 400 or the 462 I'd go for a 461 everytime. :)
There’s a nice one in the classifieds… that would be coming my way had I not just picked up a cherry MMWS 461 from a friend on here.

I have 2 ported 400s and 4 ported 462s. I know what they run like, I ran my first 462 until the piston finally cracked, it's a torch with a 20" bar and even a 24".

If you're gonna primarily run a 20" bar a 400 is a good buy, depending on what metric you use to determine what's "better"...if you're gonna cut hard dry wood with a 400 with an 84 driver chain you should upgrade the oil pump.

A 400 doesn't out cut a 462 with a 24" bar. I know some people that just play with chainsaws at the chainsaw games may tell you otherwise, it's not true. But it sounds like from your use a 400 is the ticket.
Never ran a 462 but I have ran a 400 a fair amount. To me the 400 is a good 20inch bar saw but I could never get over the sloppy AV. I believe you once compared the 400’s AV to a floppy dildo, is the 462 any better?

That’s weird I’ve never thought my 400 was floppy even with a 25” es on it. Maybe the 462 is a bit stiffer but I wouldn’t say much

It's a little bit better. But I remedied that on the 462 with the WCS suspension kit.

You can do the same on the 400 with rubber buffers. If you actually run your saws you'll find out quick how fast those foam pieces of *s-word get soft and fall apart.
