Yes its Chinese.
Its what GB market as their chain isn't it?

I put a loop on an Echo I repaired for a bloke and it cut really well. I only used it for a tank of fuel though.

Archer chain is Jakmax not GB chain.

Jakmax and GB are mortal enemies. Don't marry, leave one biz for another and take your clientele with you. :p

Pressure cleaned everything today, repaired damaged threads, stripped the recoil starter, cleaned up the piston transfer in the cylinder and replaced the fuel line and filter.

Will stop by the husky shop tomorrow arvo to order a few other bits I need, and then I will just be waiting on a slow boat from china and the states.

I am however still concerned with the carb.

Its a Chinese carb and the owner had to fit the walbro throttle and choke assembly's to make it work.

When I puled the choke shaft out, I found that the spring loaded ball that locates the choke and holds it is on the opposite side to the notch in the choke shaft.

Got my hands on the origional WJ 39 and kind of feel relieved at the sight of it.

Stripped it and found 2 things up front that will need attention

Concave welsh plug

I cant see anything wrong with it so I will put it all back together with the OEM parts that were fitted to the Chinese carb and see how it goes.

Cylinder measured 105/123/74 with a .008 gasket fitted.

I have taken it to 102/123/75 and widened the ports out a bit.
Tidied up and smoothed out the lowers and left the uppers alone.

Nothing major but with a muffler mod it should run nice.

Not sure if I should give it a bit more intake or leave it alone. I didn't want to hurt case compression

FINALLY got all the bits and put it together today.

There is definitely something wrong with the carb.
I can choke it and get it to start easy. Revs and runs fine under throttle but wont idle. No matter what I do it wont idle.

When I come off throttle it idles for a couple seconds then stalls lean. It briefly makes that fluttering sound a saw makes when you lean the idle out to much when tuning, then stops.
Needs to be choked to get it to fire again.

I suspect it has a blockage in the L idle circuit and the only fuel I am getting is from the main jet when choked or under throttle.

Thoughts?
Suggestions?

I am thinking the carb needs a run in an ultrasonic cleaner

Stripped the carb, removed the welsh plug and H/L screws.
Poked fine wire up the holes and found no blockages.
Dribble petrol in through the jets and it comes out where it is supposed to without an issue.
Put it all back together with no change.

After a bit more testing it seems to run for a bit and lean out as it runs, then stalls out lean.

I am thinking it may have the wrong metering spring it it, and is not letting enough fuel through to keep the saw running.

I could just bend the metering arm up a bit but I would rather find a correct rated spring that's not as strong.

Fingers crossed

Brewz, if you haven't replaced the intake spacer block, I would strongly recommend doing so.

The first 394 I overhauled (I've done two now and the third will be my own) I had a problem very similar to what you are experiencing. That intake spacer houses the carb pulse port. It was recommended to me to replace that spacer because over time they can develop very small cracks that will interfere with the pulse signal getting to the carb properly. I'm not sure what it will cost you there in Australia, but I paid about $20 here in the US. Ya hate to just throw parts at thing, but I might be worth a shot in this case. In fact, I would probably do that before condemning the metering spring and/or lever.

also, make darn sure you didn't put the intake block in upside down... I did that, and it did run, but the idle was funky and had ZERO power in the cut... was really weird

I did the metering spring and it didn't fix it.

I actually looked at that intake spacer and thought, I wonder if its got an issue.

Will strip it down again tomorrow and inspect closer

Thanks for the advice..... Stay tuned, I may need more
