Keep sanding if the spot gets bigger it's junk if it cleans up more might be ok

Keep going. Have to to remove ALL of the transfer. You're gonna be at it a while with 500 grit. After it's gone hit the bore with red scotchbrite. Seriously though, do some searching here. All of the info in this thread has been covered elsewhere on this very site.

Don't hold back, that plating is tough stuff. Great first rebuild candidate you have there.
