Picked up 2 new save edge double bevel files from DDave. I sharpened 36" of full comp, and yesterday sharpened half of a 16" and they won't sharpen left cutters. The top and bottom are fine, but the edges are dull. I'm gonna send them in to get sharpened. Might end up switching brands

What brand of chain?
36" is old oregon. 16" I'm not sure. They were flawless at first. Huge noticeable difference from my older ones.

It's weird. When I'm filing it'll come up through the top plate, opposite of a beak, and if I push into the side plate it just slides across it without filing. They'll do rh cutters fine. And I can do LH cutters inside out fine.

I had that with a couple pferd files. I came to conclusion it was the stihl chain
Stihl chain is hell on files. It's just so hard. The Oregon chain is much easier to file. Plus the Oregon chain has taller cutters which helps chip flow.
My work chains are round ground Stihl.
My play chains are square filed Oregon

I've gotten some crappy Save Edge double bevel files, Pferd too

Seems to be hit and miss
What was your solution? I wish several brands were readily available. Must just be us saw nerds are the only ones using them and there's no real market.

All 4 now do the same thing, but opposite. 2 won't file left cutters. 2 won't file right cutters

Make sure you are not back dragging the file on the return stroke. If you do it will wipe a file out quickly, especially on your non dominant side. It's not uncommon to mark a file to what side of the cutter it does best. I've used colored tape to reference. So, multiple files are needed.

I hear ya. I'm a knuckle dragger, not a file dragger. I'll keep them for awhile- 1 for left and 1 for right. When that doesn't work I'll send them in to have them sharpened and see how that works

save edge sharpens files (any file) cheaper than buying one and if you get one that wont cut right out of the box they replace them free as well
they are good to deal with and quick to respond to any issues
next order I will be getting some goofy files two flat sides and two rounded edges all with cut
John asked me to get theml, no idea how they work yet
