Note the three beveled sections. This holds the chain holding section in place as it is allowed to pivot towards the chain tooth.

A photo as I'm putting it back together.

A photo of the two chain bases side by side. The look the same on top except for the drilled and tapped chain movement handle and the fact that the dowel is pressed in from the bottom on the original and is the end of a bolt on the square grind attachment.

I'm thinking a skilled machinist could mod the original. I'll be glad to bring my grinder to one of Randy's GTG so folks can see it and take measurements so they could mod theirs if so desired. For the skilled I believe it would be quite easy. I would be willing to work with such a machinist if they were within a few hours drive. It's the least I could do for the gift of all of the great info I've gotten off of the forums over the years.

Question for you guys. Using the tree sided file, which side of the file cuts the top plate, is it the wide edge?

Also, I have a double bit file too but damn it all, ya just can't get the gullet without using another file to clean it up.

The triangle file feels more comfortable but I'm going to make a mess either way I reckon.

I think I'll be getting a single bit file to try next. Finished it with the double bit. Took a while lol. I'm naturally better with my left hand than my right, that's for sure. I always knew that round filing but it became much more obvious after trying square.

What shape is that file? Doesn't look like any I've ever seen. Hard to tell from your photo.

Price for one?

This was an unsharpened square ground Stihl chain prior to this. I didn't dull it too bad so I had a descent but dull edge to start with. I found it works best to use a light hand on these files. The gullet was a little bit of a pain to get cleaned. Stihl leaves a lot of material in there that needs taking out with the round file.
