The K&N filter I saw just looked like a fine metal screen and that was it. Almost like just a backfire arrestor in a boat. OK for keeping pets and kids from going down the intake, but not much more than that...it was years ago.
Might have been a Stihl winter filter from an old 064 HD type. I have one here. It will not fit a 660 or 460. Could be....let me get the part numbers.

Edit: 1124-120-1620 no gasket and has that square mesh sheet metal on the inside. Stainless steel jacket. Wire mesh filter/screen.

Since then, I've heard stories about Ford 7.3 diesel turbos getting dusted from K&N filters, too...which sounded plausible to me after seeing what looked like a K&N spaghetti strainer on a bike...

That sounds like the gauze was missing. And my buddy had one on his Ford. It only tripped a MAF fault because he over oiled it.

FWIW, I kinda neglected a top-handle tree saw I have for too long, and when I opened up the air filter to clean it, I realized that the saw had been eating a fair amount of sawdust for a fair length of time. I mean, it was almost caked in the barrel of the carb. Everything looks fine and clean with the P&C or what I can see of it through the ex port...I guess you need to burn a LOT of wood to get a milligram of ash (most of which blows out the exhaust anyway)...*s-word, I remember fueling my Mom's Firebird V8 once when she ran out of gas, and the freaking plastic gas cap from the gas can fell down through the carb when I primed it, and I couldn't retrieve it...

It's ROUGHAGE! :SimpHomer: Keeps things regular and suchlike!

Dead ash and white oak will expose a weak oiler real fast too

You know when you stand around a fire and no matter where you go the wind is just right and the fukkin smoke follows you..

I worked the ground yesterday and no matter where I cut from the wind was blowing the dust in my face and all over the saw..I had to take my clothes off on my porch I was so dirty between the wind/rain/mud...just one of them days.

Can someone show me how to put an HD2 filter on?..yesterday was my first try.

Mike, are you saying that Ryan is too stupid to put an air filter on a saw?

No one said he did it. I have seen several pro saws come into me with problems, and the filter is not seated properly. When you are in a rush, and it is not yours, stuff happens.

Are you trying to tell me that big stuff just miraculously squeezed through the filter? Something was wrong.

There was no big stuff that got past, I put the air filter on.

That big stuff fell off the outer edge of the air filter when I took it off, that was over 10 tanks of gas yesterday.

I don't know why everybody has trouble with the HD2 filter. Mine works great. No fines get by it. NONE. ZERO.

To make sure it was seating right, I glued an old garden hose o-ring to the metal top of the air filter -- this prevents the screw tightener thing from bottoming out. I also put a thin layer of grease on the bottom of the filter where it touches the plate.

Not long after buying my AM 660 and then buying the HD2 filter and then hearing all the HD2 horror stories, I bought the Maxflo foam filter system ... but I've never used it, since the HD2 works fine for me...OP, didn't your HD2 come with a felt cover? Mine did, and that catches most everything over 6" DBH...

You aren't using your saws very much if you haven't seen this happen, I don't think anyone should have to go to the garden section of a hardware store and buy anything for a filtration system on a 1000 dollar chainsaw in 2018.

I've bought alot of chainsaws in the last 10 years and never saw an HD2 filter come with any type of felt cover.

Mount the blade backwards and use the saw upside down.

Well, I've never seen an HD2 filter come WITHOUT the prefilter. So there!

You sure the genius who's installing your filters isn't also trashing the prefilters as "packing material"?
