So what would you use to catch particles smaller than 8" DBH? It it true that you can throw a cat through a K&N filter without the cat touching anything?

I've seen K&N filters for bikes but they didn't look useful for much beyond grading concrete aggregate...the one I saw looked like it was set up for 2b stone
Well, I heard you get what you pay for. So they must be good, right?
Gotta use filter oil with K&N

I don't know why everybody has trouble with the HD2 filter. Mine works great. No fines get by it. NONE. ZERO.

To make sure it was seating right, I glued an old garden hose o-ring to the metal top of the air filter -- this prevents the screw tightener thing from bottoming out. I also put a thin layer of grease on the bottom of the filter where it touches the plate.

Not long after buying my AM 660 and then buying the HD2 filter and then hearing all the HD2 horror stories, I bought the Maxflo foam filter system ... but I've never used it, since the HD2 works fine for me...OP, didn't your HD2 come with a felt cover? Mine did, and that catches most everything over 6" DBH...
I just tore down a few high mileage 461’s and I think your washer is a big key to keeping fines out, I am seeing a lot of junk coming through the knob hole, and the grease is helping too! I put a new hd2 on one of his saws and after one use fines we’re coming in the knob hole, going to try a rubber washer and see how it works

I work on bikes as a day job. I've cleaned (and re-oiled) probably 12-15 K&N's this season. I see nothing getting past them. Someone must have run it dry and it deteriorated.

Never seen anything get by well cleaned and oiled K&N type filters. Bet they still use them at Glamis and ElMirage. Those have some fine dust in the air.

Yep I second this. They are great filters. I have them on the 5 saws, and nothing gets through them at all.

I even used the k an n spray oil on normal chainsaw flocked filters before when they let fines through the media cutting real dusty stuff. Works great.
Try veggy oil on a top cover sock or Stihl felt cover. Just spray it from a bottle and put it back on. They work great in dead wood and wash right up with soap and water. Ryan's saw just need air injection. They all get hammered at work sites on company time.

My mill is using the same thing as old reliable. Felt outer cover, felt filter with a cone shaped cut out in the foam inner filter. If fines do get through they get caught in the foam. It gets oil from spit-back. Just enough to grab the few fines if they get that far. I have that set up on several saws. 1122 1128 HD

The best filter setup I’ve seen on a saw is the one on a 395. Stays clean forever and you can even oil it if you want with k an n oil, nothing will pass through guaranteed. Has a screw clamp holding it on too.

The K&N filter I saw just looked like a fine metal screen and that was it. Almost like just a backfire arrestor in a boat. OK for keeping pets and kids from going down the intake, but not much more than that...this was years ago.

Since then, I've heard stories about Ford 7.3 diesel turbos getting dusted from K&N filters, too...which sounded plausible to me after seeing what looked like a K&N spaghetti strainer on a bike...
