Mauser story:

My good friend and hunting partner Bob (since passed on) drug home a ‘sporterized Mauser’ from an estate auction for $65.

When I looked at it I saw right away it wasn’t a milsurp.

FN Mauser model of 1952. Commercial built in 7 x 57. [emoji108]

Complete with (almost obligatory) K4 Weaver.

Bob parked a 3x9 Redfield Widefield on the bridge and hunted with it the next twenty five years.[emoji106]

The pennys hide the stock reinforcement bolt a previous owner installed. I replaced the cheapo Lincoln cents with much more classy Indian head. [emoji6]

Stock is original with all the dings and scrapes earned hunting.

The broken stock wrist has been repaired with brass pins and epoxy after I acquired it from Bob, God bless him.

7 x57 is also a good deer round

The plastic baggie holds a Redfield aperture sight like it would have had on it when sold new.

Attended quite a few gun shows looking for one.

7x57 would be my choice of the Mauser rounds..

But the Winchester line is far and away my favorite.

It can be. Seems like some were rechanbered into 30-06.

7.65 used the .311” bullet like the Enfield. .308” -06 bullet would be a poor fit.

I wouldn't.
A box of ammo will last ya many deer seasons.

SGAmmo has 180 grain soft point ammo in 7.65x53 argentine for sale.
$17 for a box of 20

That's plenty cheap for many deer seasons to come.

Listed as .311" across grooves. awt 6 & 7.62 NATO and most all 30's .003" smaller. Doesn't seem like much till grouping out a ways. It may be more direct to rebarrel for a round that the bolt face fits the base of the round.
Uncle Jim took a 6.5 arisaka carbine & rechambered with .257 Robert's improved (.264 actual) makes an efficient consistent shooter. The extractor got a little attention to slip over and into the rim.
But even less expensive may be to reload the brass, not complicated. Requires attention, but unlike pistol reloading can't double load for explosive results! Still need attention to quantity of which powder. The faster burn powder = less volume. A slower burn can be more accurate since it more completely fills the case for consistent burn characteristics.
Press& dies most expensive but reusable forever , expendables 100 each bullets, primers & a pound of powder sets a person up once the have a grain scale or volume set for powder with manual.
Went over to Midway to find a three die set for your calibre $33 w/ powder scoop, loading recomendation. press, primers, bullets & recommended powder will provide 100 shots using the brass you have. Or 50 cartridge cases is $63 from midway IIRC

Good shot placement could make the acquiring of over 1000# of healthy protein from that box.

Arisaka type 36 (the 6.5mm x 50 model):

I simply rechambered mine to 260 Remington (6.5 x 51). No more unobtainum brass/rounds required.

Brass is now super cheap. .243 Win pickups at the local public range resized and necked up. [emoji108]

However, I did ruin a perfectly collectible Mukden arsenal (ground mum) by sporterizing it. [emoji48]

I've read that British .303 is REAL close.
But I've not read of anybody using it in one.
