First thing I'd look at is gauge and clean all connections.
Is it an amp meter? Or volt meter?
They operate differently.

Volt meter I think..

Doubt it even works.
If volt meter, I'd start looking at connections, everywhere. Voltmeters are wired in parallel in the circuit and generally won't kill the circuit. Ammeters are wired in series. If they go bad, they'll kill the circuit.

Question...

Why would a tractor need an amp meter?

Take a voltmeter set on AC volts and ground the negative meter lead then put the positive on the alternator stud. If it shows over 500mV AC, you may have a diode trio problem in the alternator.

On to the next out of the pile.

Deere 70: post ‘dip’.

Entire fuel line tank to carb melted away.

Broken part welded.

I think they managed to weld the bottom plate to the crankcase. [emoji2960] I’m not going to remove it.

Bar studs replaced by 3/8”-16 all thread.

Shop Ace Hardware for a pair of 3/8” x 5/16” or get Allen to make custom studs. [emoji1696]

It had drain oil in the tank. [emoji90]

Fuel system and points overhaul next.

Old time stuff had Ammeters instead of volt meters. Ammeter measures the actual current flow. Amps and volts are closely related but are two different measurements.
You can have 14 volts while it's running and not be charging the battery. (Although it's a good enough indication that the battery is getting a charge). But it's amperage that actually charges the battery. Voltage is how much pressure is behind the amperage.
So, they are both dependant on each other in order to do different things. But, at the same time, they can also be considered independent of each other.
Myself, I'd rather be monitoring my charging with an Ammeter. It tells me more.

Ugh...

I was always told volts are velocity.
Amps were volume..

I am NOT an electrician... lol.

FWIW:
An ammeter is a voltmeter with a shunt.

It’s a parallel circuit thing.

I’m with Steve P, I much prefer an ammeter. After start it should show 40 or more amps and the drop back as the battery is recharged.

Volts are more like pressure.
Amps are more like flow.
You can have high pressure and no flow (high voltage with a switch turned off), and you can have low pressure and high flow (only 12 volts to a starter but 500 amps of current).

I think after church, ima gonna go out to the shop and work on the flux diode shunt capacitor on Levi’s 1972 diesel tractor...

See if I can make it a cyberwatt parallelogram..
