I wanted to let you all know my Dad passed away this morning around 11:00. He suffered for a long time and he was a Christian, so I am happy for him.
Sorry for your loss, Thomas. But happy he is with the Lord now. I lost my Dad when I was 25. I still miss talking to him.

Question on moisture meters..

Are they generally accurate?

I took a pecan split and split it again, then tested the raw face.. got 15.5%..

Seems a little soon to be that low.

I bought this a few weeks ago and it has been quite consistent. Make sure you have it set for the right species of wood. What model and brand do you have? It seems like there are only a few trusted brands.

Sawed up the mystery log.

Stinks like....oh my!

Cedar elm seems the most likely ID on it.

Pretty blah looking wood.

Cuts about like red oak I'd say.

I'll make firewood out over the rest of the logs and report back on it's splitting characteristics.....

My first thought was The grain has some characteristics to CATALPA How dense is it I seldom see a log that good but the lumber is strong yet light. does have an odor of its own.

Way too warm, and a bunch of blood thirsty mosquitoes out there....

The boys and I goofed around with rocks this afternoon.....
Building a retaining wall on the low side of the shed.....well, we're attempting it anyways.

I had one of those & got along fine with it, until my wife touched it & it hasn’t been seen in 2 years.

I had a painless one, it seemed to work best on cut lumber not well for firewood.
I loaned it to a guy & have yet to see it again, that was about 3 years ago.

I bought a pin type from Menards & the tips were so fine that the bent.

I don’t believe I will buy another one.

So a pinless meter placed randomly on a board is more accurate than one that goes into the wood is more accurate??
Pardon my annoyance..
I just wanna know what the hell im dealing with.
Questions like this get me sidetracked. Squirrel. Now I had to read up on things I don't plan on using anytime in the future but anywho.
Pinned meters are supposed to be more accurate for wood and substrate like it. Works by checking electrical flow between pins based on water in the test item. You can also drive in small nails and use them to test wood for moisture content at deeper levels.
Pinless use radio frequency or capacitance to measure moisture content when you don't want to leave holes in something or the surface is hard and cannot be probed. These are also relying on the material to be consistent density (which is why you have to chose what material you are testing) in order to provide an accurate reading. These are also affected by anomalies in the material being tested, think metal in the wood, which can throw off the reading.
Best case is use both for a while until you can get similar readings.
