I wanted to let you all know my Dad passed away this morning around 11:00. He suffered for a long time and he was a Christian, so I am happy for him.

Sorry for your loss, Thomas. But happy he is with the Lord now. I lost my Dad when I was 25. I still miss talking to him.

Question on moisture meters..

Are they generally accurate?

I took a pecan split and split it again, then tested the raw face.. got 15.5%..

Seems a little soon to be that low.

I bought this a few weeks ago and it has been quite consistent. Make sure you have it set for the right species of wood. What model and brand do you have? It seems like there are only a few trusted brands.

Sawed up the mystery log.

Stinks like....oh my!

Cedar elm seems the most likely ID on it.

Pretty blah looking wood.

Cuts about like red oak I'd say.

I'll make firewood out over the rest of the logs and report back on it's splitting characteristics.....

My first thought was The grain has some characteristics to CATALPA How dense is it I seldom see a log that good but the lumber is strong yet light. does have an odor of its own.
