A different brand and not a weedeater, but my Dolmar PS510 has a converter on it too. I found that the inlet from the engine to the muffler pointed straight at the outer part of the muffler shell, in between the muffler mounting holes. I took a 1 inch hole saw and made a new exit hole from the muffler. It was a straight shot out then. Turned it into a very angry little saw.

Craftsman; probably only good for wood...I know nothing about drill bits.

I don't see any way to get this cat out without opening up the muffler, but I have no doubt you can do it
I did three of my Echo saws with a 1" hole saw. It took about one for each muffler as the cat really is hard stuff, as you encountered with your drill bits.
The one on the Dolmar 421 can be removed by grinding the weldments that hold it to the muffler shell.

Spotted this old Sun machine last week while performing maintenance on an old freight drum machine.
These were the sh*t back when I was growing up.

I’ve got an old snap on version of that. I’d love to find one of the old magneto and distributor test stands for adjusting advance curves.

The best way is to open the muffler at the seams and then re-weld it back together after you have removed the guts. But that would require welding.
Preferably TIG
But I managed to stitch one together with a small wire feed once. It was ugly but functional.
Probably not worth the amount of time it took me.
