Been eyeing the Lowrance version for a bit, just can't justify the coin right now. $1500 is same for both Lowrance and Garmin transducers except I would also have to buy a Garmin head unit. Of course I would need a new Lowrance unit for the bow of my boat if I went that way as well.

I will post some photos of the other stuff tomorrow, it has the typical oak pores & it stinks. That’s why I didn’t think the stuff I asked about was Red Oak, no pores & it smells sweet. It even looks different on the cross cuts and has different bark. Maybe they are two different types of Oak.
Like 150 types...

Oh, and some can hybridize...

White is unique. Burr is too.. “giant fuzzy acorns”

Red and black are different, but all lumped together..

Post oak is closer to white than red...

Pin and water oak damn similar...

And on and on..

I did some reading last night on the varieties of Oak , there are lots of them. Here is the other stuff, it has the pores & the pungent Red Oak smell. I gave the stuff I posted yesterday another sniff this morning, it smells damn near like Cherry. It really makes no difference, it’s all firewood now. I just put it in a different pile & will see how it seasons. The State Park just down the road has been cutting down lots of Ash,Oak & Shagbark Hickory so I have been getting as much as I can when I have time. No felling, no cleaning up the brush, just limb, buck & load.

Any of you tree gurus care to hazard a guess at this wood ID. There were 2 trees laying together at the State Park & I cut them both up. One was Oak but I am unsure on the pictured one. I gave it a better look & sniff today when splitting, it has a sweet aroma to it. The bark doesn’t match up to Honey Locust & Honey Locust has a distinctive smell, color is similar though.

My wife described the smell of red oak as Vomit smell. The smell when a kid vomits at school. It is from the tannic acid in the wood. The bark was once used for tanning hides. One must have a stainless steel kiln to kiln dry red oak. The acids will eat up a kiln made of steel.

Good day all you Oakes. White oak is the one with closed pores, used for barrel staves. $1 a foot offered for clear logs. 40 cents a board for furniture grade with character:baloon: :calimero1::chupi::confundio1: thot I'd use ones never had a use for as demo0 they still up there in the border

We had the wind yesterday, but today was an absolutely beautiful day! 70's and at least where I was, there was no wind to speak of. Sounds like maybe a couple 3 more days of this and then possibly snow Saturday and back cooler next week (if they got it right, but I have no doubt it will change, probably more than twice actually). Hope everyone has a great evening! I'm heading out with the dogs and gona watch the sunset. This time of year has some amazing sunsets out here.

Windy as hell here..

Planting oats tomorrow...

Then it’ll probably turn wet and cold and *s-wordty for 2 weeks... cause that’s how our weather is..

First, it’ll try to rot the seed in the ground, then if that don’t work, it’ll try to drown the plants..
Then if that don’t work, it’ll try to turn hot and dry to keep the plants from making seed...

Yay.... farming in SW MO...

Always windy at oat planting time! Those old Deere drills when the seed had to drop a ways to the cup would lose the oats in the wind. But we always ot a stand it seemed like.

It’s supposed to hit 75 here today with wind gusts to 50mph, we had about a tenth/inch rain last night. I was thinking about spreading some fertilizer today but that’s not going to happen, Dad has corn to haul but the ethanol plant is closed till Friday, I guess it’s back to the State Park to get more firewood.
