Any of you tree gurus care to hazard a guess at this wood ID. There were 2 trees laying together at the State Park & I cut them both up. One was Oak but I am unsure on the pictured one. I gave it a better look & sniff today when splitting, it has a sweet aroma to it. The bark doesn’t match up to Honey Locust & Honey Locust has a distinctive smell, color is similar though.

Winner. Funny how he thinks it has a sweet aroma. Most people think it stinks. I like the smell too
I will post some photos of the other stuff tomorrow, it has the typical oak pores & it stinks. That’s why I didn’t think the stuff I asked about was Red Oak, no pores & it smells sweet. It even looks different on the cross cuts and has different bark. Maybe they are two different types of Oak.

I honestly think there's a bazillion kinds of oak.
I simply point at a tree ( oak, pine, Palm, doesn't matter) and say "Oak".

Tree in the yard= yard oak.
Tree in the field= field oak.
Tree in the fence line= fence oak.
Tree fell across the road= road oak or dead oak.
Tree with barb wire tacked to it= post oak.
Tree growing in a swamp= wet oak.
Tree growing in another country= foreign oak.
Tree in England= bad accent oak.
Tree growing in Kansas= wheat oak.
Tree growing on a mountain top= lost oak.
Tree growing in the Ozarks= hillbilly oak.
Tree growing in Virginia= presidential oak.
Tree growing in New York= attitude oak.
It's easier to just say everything is an oak.
