The t-stat normally reads 72-78° in the middle of the bottom floor, courtesy of the stove... But, the temps can drop greatly the further South you venture from the spot of measurement... I need to do a lot more re-insulating and tightening in general...

I just throw more wood at it.
If I lived farther north, I'd have to do some insulating for sure.

The issue with the new ones though is that burn at a certain pace, and are limited by airflow (by design for efficiency) and arrive at their heat output differently. roughly 1/3 is from the coal bed, another 1/3 from the active fire and the last 1/3 from the secondary combustion whether Cat or non... Once the primary fuel is mostly expended you lose roughly 2/3 of your heat output. Now, my unit does a damn good job and puts out a darn good volume, but sometimes it just isn't enough to keep the propane from firing, like now.

I'd love to install a second unit but the Boss isn't too hip on the idea, hence the tightening I need to do.

Now for the heat/duration I get, I burn less than 1/4 of what Dad did in his old insert with a blower so I can't complain about that.

Which is my biggest complaint about the modern stoves.
White spider was right in his assessment of them.
They fit a nitch, but cannot replace a primary heat source, cause they can't put out 100% of their btu' for any serious amount of time..

If you need 65,000 btu output, you'd have to get a stove with 125,000 capacity and a huge firebox.
Even my old school stove can't give 100% for more than about 2 hours.

Well said. You could go bigger. But then you run into those needing an 8" flue.

I think this is why the blaze king stoves are used in cold climates.
They got some big, ugly, but massive wood capacity units.
Utilitarian you might say.
Real ash pan and everything.
Like a furnace.

I can keep the living room from 72-80 on 3 loads a day with sub zero lows. And this thing wastes a lot of heat up the flue. The old one would chew threw double that to do the same. Once your demand goes over what the big ones will put out you wouldn't want to be sitting in the same room. Or your wood is sucks.

Buddy of mine bought a cabin by Raber that had a new Quadra fire in it. Had the off-gas tubes in the top, could touch it anywhere but the front. Like you're saying, didn't work so well heating the place from 0 up to 70, but it would hold a fire for a long time. We needed a barrel stove up there. Instantly hot
