Good morning gents! I put together a saw last night with the "hot" method, heat bearings in oil and drop on crank, heat case and drop crank and bearings in. Is this the norm or what is your preferred method to put a crank in?

I'd skip the hot oil mess.

Oven and freezer method:

Put the crank and bearings in the ice maker (ziplock bags, don't want to piss off Blondie). Case halves in the oven at 275 degrees, or, until they get smelly.
Use oven mitts (yes, awkward) to drop bearings in the case halves. Put case halves back in the oven to get back up to temp. Then drop in the crank. Use three or four 5mm x 2 1/2" long screws with the heads cut off for guide pins. Don't forget the gasket!

Be prepared to use a plastic hammer and/or a block of hard wood.

The bearings are supposed to be a shrink fit in the housing and a light press fit on the crank. Polish the bearing surface on the crank with 400 or 600 wet or dry beforehand.

I work on the kitchen island. Protect the surface with cardboard or scrap of plywood. (Blondie again)

If you get the temperatures right it all falls together.

Kohler engine..
I watched the video's on the Spartan website this morning. Looks like a real solid machine. I'm hoping to get one more season of my junked up rider, and will probably buy one of these when I retire it.

Hustler has one with a tilt up deck that caught my eye too, but I still think the Spartan looks like a better machine. Sure would make changing/sharpening blades a lot easier with that tilt deck though.

Any idea how hard it is to access the blades on the Spartan?
