Most of what I cut is already down so I've learned how to work that way. As a result I'm pretty rusty when it comes to cutting one down. This time last year I was taking down a standing dead Red Oak at Al's place. About 24 inches diameter and leaning a little the wrong way. I figured no big deal, it's not rocket science, use wedges. Made my face cut, then the back cut. Tree leaned back and pitched my bar. Ran to grab tools to get the power head off, all the while the tree is popping. Got the bar nuts off but couldn't get the saw off. Out board clutch and not enough room. So I stood at arms length, holding onto the saw, ready to pull when the tree fell. It went over, I pulled and ran. No damage done, except to my ego.
A couple of weeks ago I was at Marc's. He had a couple of trees to take down. He cut the first. Uneventful. I went after the second tree. Stupid thing leaned back and pinched my saw again. I don't believe this. This is just plain stupid. Can I not take down a tree?
Last Saturday I had 3 standing dead to take down. I was a little nervous, given my past record, but all three went down without a fight.
I feel redeemed

Wind got me a couple years ago. Went to take down a few 20" white ash. Had a slight lean the right way for skidding them up to the road. Made a notch, made a back cut, wind blew it back and sat it down on my bar. So I took the power head off. Took the other saw to cut it down and did the same thing lol. Took that powerhead off and waited about 50' away. Wind gusted the other way and blew right where it was originally supposed to go, only with a hell of a barber chair. But no damage to the saws

Gotta watch those Ash trees..
The same thing and characteristics that make them desirable for cutting and splitting, also make them dangerous as hell when under load.
I've seen them split, break, and sometimes just damn near explode if ya push em too hard.
Lol

Been there a few times with big cottonwoods. Them tall bastards hog all the canopy and catch some serious air.

Makes you feel like a rookie somedays
