Osage for the win
IMG_8794.jpeg

Loaded up around 11:00
Got up at 6:00
Had stove full of hot coals, but the blower was running on low.
Cleaned a bucket of ash and klinkers out and re stoked.
Blower back on high already.

My stove hates ash buildup. We’re talking 40% less output if it’s built up at all.

One of these days I’m gonna run across a stove with an ash grate. I’ll snatch it and rebuild if necessary.. lol
If I had a big assed furnace in the basement like all the old farm houses had up north, I’d probably burn nothing but hedge.
Steady burn over a long time. Not so much that it’s “hotter”, but it gets hot, and holds for hours.
Like coal..

-12* here now, shack is still at 78*.

Just raked the coals, added some Silver Maple, Osage & Cherry to heat the place up for the morning.

The furnace fan will run this morning, humidifier sucked down about 4 gallon overnight.

Posted this elsewhere but figured I outta ask here as well.....

Any experience shortening trailer axles? just regular old spring type, not torsion.

I've seen some that appeared to have been cut in the center and welded back together.....

Been thinking about building a trailer, but most of the affordable used axles are for 8' or 8'6" overall, and I want more like 7' (or so) to the outside of the tires.
ive shortened several in the past. biggest thing is to make sure you keep the correct camber and toe after its welded or you will wear tires quickly.

Morning Midlanders!

Haven’t been out of the house since Sunday.

The MS291 went back home. 🫣

The original owner showed up here last Thursday evening and identified it correctly with paperwork. His information matched what I learned from Jack Horner supply.

I kept the new chain I had put on it. 👍

Good thing I didn’t waste my time on cleaning and tuning it other than confirming that it ran. 👌

Turns out he is well acquainted with my daughter. “Sarah, the welcome wagon.”

I’m convinced the white pickup it fell out of was likely his 16 yo driving recklessly.

What about just getting a new spindle or two. Cut one off and weld new on after you take off some length or are you wanting to just do a cheaper fix.

A cousin asked me to load his owb today & tomorrow.

Ooooph 🤢, that was nasty.

Burning fresh cut ash & hackberry, the smoke rolling out of that door was atrocious.

Creosote rolling down the chimney & oozing out around the door. It was new 3 months ago.

Definitely taking a mask when loading tonight & tomorrow.

It’s not mine & he can do as he wants…

I'm mostly picking brains at this point, wasn't sure they could be shortened.
Now that I've got some more input I'll see if I can find a good deal on axles and go from there.

I did find an axle manufacturer in Arkansas that's pretty reasonably priced and sells direct to the public, so that may be the best way to go.

I just thought that if I could pick up a pair of axles for a couple hundred bucks it would be great if they can be cut yo my desired length.

Good info bud.
I'll have to study the camber principle in an attempt to understand the science behind it.....at this point I know it exists, but that's about it.

The thought is that when loaded the axle straightens to the point the tire is perfectly vertical and the tire wears evenly.

Makes reasonable sense.

This afternoon I found a dealer in Beebe Arkansas that sells new 7k axles (any length) for $425 a pop, at that price I'd have to find used axles for $0.00 to be worth messing with cutting em down.

That's quite a little haul for travel. Have to find some other deals to work out on the way down and back unless they have a delivery point closer. Over 6.5 hours round trip.

I would be happy to swing thru there & pick them up on my way back from Georgia next month but unfortunately I don’t think they would fit in the Edge & I don’t think the roof/roof rack are solid enough to support or strap them to.
