Osage for the win
ive shortened several in the past. biggest thing is to make sure you keep the correct camber and toe after its welded or you will wear tires quickly.Posted this elsewhere but figured I outta ask here as well.....
Any experience shortening trailer axles? just regular old spring type, not torsion.
I've seen some that appeared to have been cut in the center and welded back together.....
Been thinking about building a trailer, but most of the affordable used axles are for 8' or 8'6" overall, and I want more like 7' (or so) to the outside of the tires.
What about just getting a new spindle or two. Cut one off and weld new on after you take off some length or are you wanting to just do a cheaper fix.Posted this elsewhere but figured I outta ask here as well.....

I'm mostly picking brains at this point, wasn't sure they could be shortened. What about just getting a new spindle or two. Cut one off and weld new on after you take off some length or are you wanting to just do a cheaper fix.
Good info bud.ive shortened several in the past. biggest thing is to make sure you keep the correct camber and toe after its welded or you will wear tires quickly.
The thought is that when loaded the axle straightens to the point the tire is perfectly vertical and the tire wears evenly.Good info bud.
I'll have to study the camber principle in an attempt to understand the science behind it.....at this point I know it exists, but that's about it.
Makes reasonable sense. The thought is that when loaded the axle straightens to the point the tire is perfectly vertical and the tire wears evenly.
That's quite a little haul for travel. Have to find some other deals to work out on the way down and back unless they have a delivery point closer. Over 6.5 hours round trip.Makes reasonable sense.
This afternoon I found a dealer in Beebe Arkansas that sells new 7k axles (any length) for $425 a pop, at that price I'd have to find used axles for $0.00 to be worth messing with cutting em down.

Drive something for substantial...I would be happy to swing thru there & pick them up on my way back from Georgia next month but unfortunately I don’t think they would fit in the Edge & I don’t think the roof/roof rack are solid enough to support or strap them to.
If you will front me the gas money, I will take my 97 F-250.Drive something for substantial...
