I acquired a 2001 F150 supercab to beat around in. Electric windows & door locks, one key & a key fob.

It works great to haul the dogs around with the back seat.

So about a week ago we were on our way home & I greased a fawn. I start thinking the dogs will get some good grub off it so I back up, jump out & throw it in. I walk back to the drivers door & the window is up, the door is locked & I look across & the passenger window is up.

My beagle got a whiff of deer & got all excited, while poking his nose out he locked the doors & rolled up the windows. Well chit, there my pickup sits, running, in the middle of the road with both dogs locked inside & a deer in the back. I am about 2 miles from my folks & 3 from home. Fortunately I had my normally pia phone in my pocket so I called a cousin to bring a prybar & piece of steel to unlock it.

Fast forward to tonight the wife, dogs & I went to bomgaars (about 35 mile trip ) for dog food & other stuff. It was 88* so I took the key fob with but locked the doors & left the pickup running so the dogs didn’t get hot. No dogs locking me today.

We come back out, I get everything thrown in the box, whip out the key fob & hit the unlock button & nothing…

WTH. I know it works I have used it before to unlock the damn thing. I try it a few more time & nada. I pop it open to prick with the battery, put it back together and nothing. No worries I tell the wife, I will go in & buy a new battery, I meander back to the battery section and wait for it.

They are all sold out. Everybody in the place heard the 4 letter expletive I spat out.

No worries though, I went to the supply section & grabbed a 3’ long x 1/2” wide x 1/8” think chunk of steel then went to the tool section & bought a 3 pack of prybars.

Cashier looked at me like I was nuts but we go out get it unlocked. I hop in & try the fob again, it still doesn’t work.

Then I shut the pickup off, push the unlock /lock buttons & it works just fine…. I guess I learned something new today.

So don’t leave your vehicle running & think the fob will unlock it.

I would like to punch an engineer right in the pie hole for that ingenious idea.
Or get an extra key made...

🤣

Sorry to laugh at your expense, but that's quite an amusing story.

That’s on the agenda, I was going to do it today but the dogs were with me & it was hot so I didn’t want to leave them in the pickup.

Still doesn’t make the any sense to me that the fob won’t work while the pickup is running.

I believe you've said they are trained service dogs. They should be able to go anywhere you do.

One of our friends did the training with their latest lab, and it wears a service dog banner. They haven't been denied entry yet.

Owners manual states fob only works when key in off position according to interwebs lookup. Security feature perhaps. Non-chipped key so anyone can make one and no programming.

No, these are just pets not service dogs.

It would be total chaos if they went into Bomgaars, I would be on the hook for their entire inventory of chickens, ducks & rabbits let alone the trauma it would cause any kids or softies that saw the massacre that would take place.

Now my wife would probably call them service animals for my issues but that’s a whole different can of worms …

What the heck is that? I have never owned a vehicle that came with one of those …
No keypad? Must be an XL or XLT. Not sure what years they started putting those on vehicles. If you have one with the pad and don't know the code you can find it on the module behind the rear seat on F150 and under the dash on F250. And in all seriousness if you want to look at an owners manual, Ford has them free download on their website.

I will give it a look, it’s got 208k on it & I have no idea how many owners it’s had.

It does have the keypad but didn’t figure I would ever need it or be able to figure out the code.

I can count on one hand the number of times I lock my pickups in year.

Good info & thank you.
