I got a used 20T speeco splitter, been sitting for 2-3 years but tank was dry. I checked oil, put gas in it and it started. Ran it for 30 seconds, shut it off, and it was smoking. Checked oil and it appears to have water in the oil.

1) Did I ruin the motor?
2) If not, what is the best way to insure all of the bad oil is out? Just change it once? Change it once, run it, and change it again? Is there something I can use to flush it?

No drain it , fill with diesel start and run 30 seconds drain, 2 or 3 times . Fill with oil run it till it blows maybe 2 months maybe never. Replace with proper predator motor from H.F.

Is it an overhead valve type engine? Or a regular flathead type? Overhead valve are usually oil pressure type engines. Flatheads are splash lube.
Diesel is fine to use. Personally I use Marvel Mystery oil. But I’d fill, run a couple of minutes, drain and repeat a couple of times. Should be fine.

This is why I don't mess with fixing stuff. Drained bad oil, filled with Marvel Mystery oil and ran for 1 minute and drained; filled with Marvel Mystery oil and ran for 2 minutes and drained; filled with oil, now the piece of junk starts and won't stay running more than a second or 2. I am tired of pulling on it.

Any ideas?

Take it to Matt and make him work on it. Actually drop the float bowl and look for junk in it. Even when drained and ran dry it seems like there is always some fuel left and unless you use a fuel conditioner you will run into problems. Watery looking oil can happen at times when the float would stick and run into the crankcase via the low oil shut down tube while sitting.

I took the bolt out of the float bowl, fuel was going everywhere and wouldn't stop. I never got the float bowl off; put the bolt back in and will find a repair shop.

Trying to remember what that carb looks like. Probably can get a chinese replacement for cheap and just swap. You can pinch off the fuel line and the bowl will be a bit hard to pop off at times. Usually just grab it and wiggle it back and forth by hand.

A lot of those Tecumseh and clone carbs have the main and pilot jets in the bolt that hold the carb bowl on. They don’t tolerate stale fuel whatsoever, so I’ve ended up using TruFuel straight gas in the ones I have.

Had a GC160 on the log splitter give me the run around earlier this fall, many of the same issues you have mentioned. Changed the plug and all was good again.

I did chase a lot of other possibilities, took all of 10-15 seconds for the engine to clean up after the new plug was put in. Has been good ever since.
Good luck.
