80% chance of rain this afternoon. Got leaves from the front yard in the pickup and hope to get started on the back. Need to take pickup out and dump before the rain and would like to cut a load of wood if possible.
We shall see how the day goes.

2x6’s and 2x10’s for the new steer pen.

I got a 5 gallon bucket of black paint. We’ll see how long these will last out in the weather once painted.

Bet it’s as long as treated crap..

Got started on some oak last night.
5/4” trailer floor boards. It’s just a 12’ single axle trailer. I was worried 2” oak might add too much weight for an oversized lawn mower trailer.

Missing cabinet finally came in and installed (second picture lower right). Also had enough money left over for a matching pantry cabinet. Countertops are supposed to be installed this week before Thanksgiving.
Getting closer everyday.

What flavor of oak?
You don't have a roof over the mill?

When you guys cut saw logs to be milled how much additional length do you leave for shrinkage, trim to final length etc?
It depends on what it's going to be used for.
Framing lumber, just a couple inches is sufficient to square up the ends of the boards....if it's intended to be dried and planed, closer to 6" is needed to get rid of checking and planer snipe.

My general rule is 4" on 8' logs, up to 8" on 16-20' logs....that way if I decide to cut a longer log into two shorter ones I've still got sufficient trim.

Not when I’m using it..

I put the tires on it and move it from place to place.

If I’m not going to be using it for a meaningful period of time, I just back it in the barn barn.

But mostly, it lives outdoors.

Boards will shrink by width and thickness, but the length doesn’t really change. About 6 inches of extra length on a log is good enough for and trimming.

On the slabs I cut, generally, I seal up the end grain so it doesn’t crack too bad..

I use absolutely anything I have on hand. Roof tar, paint, polyurethane. Lol
