I just bought 2 fair lambs..

125 lbs per

$2.00 per pound

Processing was $120 each

Got about 75-80 lbs of boxed product..

Do the math on that one....

As far as hogs, we’ll be processing 2 this winter ourselves.
If I gotta pay the locker plant, there is zero reason to buy anything other than stuff from the store.
There is an imbalance in the industry right now.
Meat processors are not worth their money in current conditions.. meat factories are twice as efficient... and that’s too bad.
2x125 lbs=250 lbs
250lbs x $2.00 per pound=$500
500+240=$740
$740/80lbs=$9.25 per pound

Doesn't sound right if I know you, just sayin'... Or my math is wonky

No, your math is right.

The fact a local processor charges $120 per 65 lb carcass is horse *s-word...

If they have to, then so be it.. but they are doing it wrong. And I’ll not participate in their stupid game...

Good morning folks 66 to 84 today. Looks like we should be getting back to the closer to expected weather pattern for this time of year in a day or two.
Trying to do a crabgrass knockdown, having limited success so far. Yuk.
THEY'RE claiming 14° less temp and rain dem 4 casters, lol

Watching in person would definitely be a benefit. There's a couple YouTube channels that go into pretty good depth on the process of cutting up hogs as well. I've watched several videos showing the majority of it.

I already had a few books saved on Amazon, but added the ones you recommended as well.
Thrift books... online will be less $ if they have it. Xcelent service within a week delivery on most of my orders

We will be processing our own hogs this winter.

Otherwise, we should be buying everything from sams club. Screw the extra hassle..
This is why we do our own meat processing, I'm not going through all the expense and work of raising pigs or whatever, and end up paying more than I would at the store.
I don't enjoy chopping on dead things THAT much....
We aren't raising chickens currently, because I can buy a good quality free range chicken in the local store for less than half of what I can raise it for on account of the cost of feed.

It's too bad, but it's how it is currently.

The locker I used for sheep was flat rate $100 per sheep. You are correct on the $120 per 65# being horse pucky

I'd rather pay store price and go through a locker, than buy anything from Sam's Club. Who knows what's in that meat, or where it even comes from.

At least if you are buying a hog, sheep or beef from someone you know, you know where it’s coming from. Especially hogs, @Sawdust Man has it right with raising them on dirt.
And that's exactly how the guy I buy from raises them.

Edit: This mentality was why I mentioned "priorities", in another post. Knowing where my meat comes from is important. Supporting small business (even if I'm cheap and complain about pricing), instead of huge corporations, is important.
