You could build a block smoker/pit fairly cheap. Hard part is usually the grate to go over it.

Yup.

Welded bar grating is expensive. We built many elevated walkways at the plant. You had to watch the material close or it would grow legs. I think half the maintenance men had home made BBQ grills.
Heavy expanded metal was the other decking of choice.

Checking the camper over. Getting ready to head to Roaring River this weekend. We'll see if the granddaughters can catch a trout.

I'd be going to Taneycomo. Trout usually have been in there long enuff to regain their color. And, get bigger and wilder.

Eric,
Do you just dry lay the blocks with that kind of smoker for temporary duty?

A 1 1/2" Rapalla floating minnow works excellent in Taneycomo. Drag it fast along the bottom. Catch browns vrs 'bows 4:1. I use a very light bait casting outfit. Stick the rod tip in the bottom gravel.

My question is, are they legal at the trout parks?

Yes they are (or they were). There are sections of the river that are "fly only" but me and a buddy snuck in there and used crank baits there too :)

In fact, what is (or used to be) illegal is "real/live bait" IIRC, such as real salmon eggs. And guess what, we used those too :) You ever seen a trout look at a fake salmon egg? Swim right up to it and turn their nose, or put it in their mouth and spit it out; a real salmon egg, not so much, they can't resist.

Use very light line (1-2 lb test), the water is so clear the fish can see it. Most of the fish are small anyway. You may want use heavier line if you find a deep hole you want to try and lure a lunker out of.

My 2 cents worth. 2lb. test or less if the conditions stay as they are now. Below the first whistle bridge on the lodge/store side. Toss it in and crank like crazy. Used to use it to get me to one below the limit and then spend the rest of the day catch-and-release.

We used those too with success, but nothing worked like those wee-craws. People were looking at us like "WTF are they using"?
