Took a course in I C engines at Rolla circa 1965.
Along came all the bull chit emission crap early ‘70s.
I’m like WTF? Burn more fuel to reduce parts per million. Just put out more parts entirely they did.
One point in compression ratio in the 8-10:1 range was good for an increase in brake thermal efficiency of 7-8% per point.
EGR further reduced efficiency. Retard timing further reduced mileage.

Had a guy tell me yrs ago when he lived in comiefornia that he had a 66 impala restoration fresh 327 was putting out less emissions than his new 2000 Buick
