My goal is to have a decent rifle, with a scope, by next season. Don't need a new one. Used will do just fine. While I was out visiting in Kansas over the weekend I stopped in a pawn shop and was telling the guy what I was interested in. Nothing fancy but 243, 270 or 30.06. He thought he could put into something in that range with a scope for about $250. Does that sound reasonable?
Yes, very..

I doubt the scope on it would be very good, but ya never know. Most all the rifles I’ve bought were in the $500 range.

None of this pencils in my mind with the cost of input and out put even with the higher prices we saw a few years ago.
It does not pencil out at all Kenneth.

Even if an Iowa Farm could average 200 bushel of $5 corn, it could not service the debt on $10,000 per acre ground.
There is a bit of a land grab going on at the moment. For various reasons depending on the purchaser.
Meaning: they are willing to expend their existing capital and tie it up in the form of dirt, as opposed to investing it elsewhere. Those old enough to remember the farm bloodbath of the 80’s should recognize some similarities. It will take a couple large ones to fall first, then many could follow, depending on what is done to prop up the artificially high land prices. Like Machine said though, the bottom is not that low as long as there are people with resources willing to pay for land just for recreational purposes.

I remember a few years back, maybe 2012 or 13, people about had strokes around here, because some irrigated ground went for 2500 and acre. It's worth nowhere near that now. How the heck can they make a go of that at those prices? That's crazy prices.

Irrigated farm ground over here that is good dirt will always bring $10-12k acre

I'm not a farmer, so I don't know exactly how Gov subsidies work, but I do know that grows with every acre a farmer acquires. There's websites that show how much certain farmers get in subsidies every year. One farmer in the county I live in gets about 500k a year., give or take. I'm sure it fluctuates depending on yield. That's a pretty good jag, for just owning ground. He may own close to 20 sections, but still, all that was inherited, so it's not like he came out of pocket for it. Point being, I'm sure subsidies play into things, probably to a greater extent than we know.

NW Iowa is my part of the country. When I attended an auction and they are selling the farm land I keep my hands in my pockets. It's all about location. The bidders are usually the adjacent land owners trying to add on. Amazing how the bids fly. The banks sometimes bring a meal.

If I remember correctly either Sioux or O’Brien county hold the state record for highest per acre auction results. Seems like it was over 19k per acre.

I tell the farmers when I try to buy their timber and the are whining that there ain't no subsidies in logging!
If it's a bad timber job I can't ask the gov for more money!
Usually scratch their heads and agree.

I was holding back a bit, because I don't want to sound like a hypocrite, since my grandpa was a farmer/rancher, but one of the things that gets me the most about subsidies is, the fact that some act like they won't get by without it, yet they drive a $60k pickup, the wife drives a $60k SUV, the 16 year old kids, drive brand new $30k vehicles and they just built a new 5k sq ft house 5 years ago (when prices were all high). Then they look at me like I'm scum, because I work for a living, drive a 40 yr old pickup with 320k miles on it and my 900 sq ft house cost me $17,500, and is about 110 years old.

They fail to realize, that if you turned us both upside down and see who owned the most, I'd be better off, because I'm not owned by bankers and the Gov.

Sometimes, I have a hard time distinguishing the line between politician and farmers and welfare families, other than the fact most farmers actually produce something. Not all mind you, just some. Some farm for insurance, and subsidies.
