Anyone else bothered by mice this winter!
[emoji848]
I was rudely awakened at 6:30 by one trapped in my bedroom wastebasket. He was trying to jump out without success.

Tossed his ass out the back door.

We’ve been catching one or two a week with glue (sticky) traps.

This year I put Ketch-All traps around the outside of the house. Catch them before they get stuck in the walls and die. Plus smell. I have seen a bunch in the wood lot and barn. Found one in the air filter of the truck. Then another in heater duct of truck.

Morning midlanders!

Minus six here in a River City. [emoji21]

Tool grade as in manufacturing machinery.
I'm going to sound kind of dumb here, but does this splitter have a tie rod cylinder? I have no way of knowing. Home Depot has them $230 cheaper than Menards, looks to be the same. The 22 ton is way cheaper, same motor, 30% faster cycle time. I think the slower one suits me, and the extra power can handle the elm...

They have a Dirty Hand 27ton for under $1300. Is this a good brand? I had a Kohler mower engine in the 90s, and it ALWAYS started first pull, and never used a drop of oil in 6 years of commercial use. I just don't know if the hydraulics are good.

14 second cycle time.

The 30 ton Brute® is 1199.

I'm starting to actually think seriously about this.

My 22 ton is a Dirty Hands from Menards. I've had it several years and have no complaints.

That's a good buy! I know I paid more for mine. Menards was the only one that had them at the time. Besides splitting hedge for my parents every winter, I also hire myself out to split wood for people. My splitter has seen a lot of use and just keeps going.

Well, that was enough testimonial for me. Ordered for pickup in a couple of weeks. I like Menards, and feel loyal to them, but this is too much savings to pass up. I get a sore shoulder trying to beat a wedge through a single large elm or red maple log, and this will help.

Do you hire out hourly for splitting?

This will fit well with my tree removal business, once I get it going.

@Louie B I charge $40 for the first hour and $15 each additional hour. Its worked out well. The customers have all been happy and the $40 first hour charge covers me in case its just a one or two hour job. Of course, in 3 years I've only had maybe 2 dozen customers.lol I only advertise on Craigslist, I need to see if there's a local facebook page I could advertise on. I should probably make some cards and give them to tree companies too. The original idea was just to help pay for the splitter. Judging by customer feedback, I could charge $20 an hour and they'd still be happy.

Yep, I do hourly. Do they offer assembly? I'd let them if they do, you can always double check things. It is possible to uncrate, unload and assemble your own though. I did because I didn't want to wait. I uncrated it in the bed and unloaded one piece at a time. What part of Kansas are you in? I'm in Wichita

Interesting that people would pay someone an hourly rate to split their wood. A lot of variables go into the amount of wood a person can split in an hour.

Ive trapped over 30 in my garage over the last two weeks. Slowing down but still going. First i put the 50# bags of bird food in a rolling, sealable container. That made them hungry so they jumped at the peanut butter flavored traps; splat

I'd charge $40 per hour. Assuming a 1 cord per hour rate minimum.
Good wood = 2 cord per hour. Good deal for those willing to capitalize on it.
Elm and Gum would get expensive per cord.. Lol..

I tell people in the ad that I work hard, don't take smoke breaks or play on a phone. You're undoubtedly correct though, I'd probably get more business if I offered flat quotes.

I am not saying that either. You could get the screws put to you on that deal. Try splitting Gum, Elm, or even green Pecan for $40/cord...lol. Or, 36" knotty oak rounds.

What type of splitter are you using?

That is my point exactly. I would gladly pay $40 per cord for somebody to split Gum and Sycamore. The green pecan I have been splitting is not much better.

Only in a perfect scenario would paying someone to split your wood work out in the best interest of both parties IMO.

It could possibly work out, but the qty would have to be enough to justify a helper to fetch rounds keeping the splitter busy. large rounds just suck from a production standpoint. I despise anything over 20" for volume of production. Split 2 cycles = 1 usable chunk... Yuk.
My 4 way is useless once they get over 20", but at 18" or less, at least you can cycle once and get 2 sticks, then flip and with one more stroke get 4 burnables. So 2 cycles = 6 usable pieces.
Ideally, it's 1 cycle = 4 pieces.. = 2 + cords per hour, minimum staff of 2-3.

I'm in Lawrence. A ways off from you.

I'll be assembling it. I don't think Home Depot will want to put it together. I've assembled three trailer kits, it should be OK. I just got offered some large oak logs, so it will get some use when I get it here.

But then there's the service aspect of it.
I used to split everything by hand. All the garbage I couldn't split went into an "uglie's" pile.
When that pile started to get oppressive, I'd rent a splitter and have a big day.
If someone offered to come out and split productively all day for $20 an hour, I'da paid it gladly just to clean up the loose ends.
