I got my Homelite Super XL because of the blue color like your XL-12, the metallic blue is a great color!

Light metallic blue also looks fantastic on a 70's Craftsman made by Poulan. If I ever paint a car or truck I think that is what I'm gonna go with. Bring an old XL-12 into the paint shop and have them read the color on it!

I have a Super XL on the bench with a blue coil, and naturally there is no spark.

I will leave this coil in the oven overnight (185° F) and see what happens. Assuming that does not help, has anyone tried any of the aftermarket coils?

Thanks for your input.

Temperature usually damages the ignition coil 😎 The only thing that can help is cleaning it, it helped me once on a lawn mower

What does this do, clear out any moisture that has potentially gotten inside?
Yes if the coating is cracked baking it will remove the moisture which is shorting the coil internally. If you get the moisture out then it sometimes regains spark and you can reseal it with some more epoxy or an automotive rtv. Sometimes this works and sometimes not.

I’ll see if the ugly xl I have that my aunt gave me with the others has spark, I’m pretty sure it ran but has mag rot pretty bad and I’ve decided it’s parts because I have his newer nice one that runs.

More times than not a self contained coil what will fail is the built in trigger device .Some times the oven trick works some times not .A points type ignition seldom has a coil failure .
Coil swaps can be a puzzle to solve .However can be done with some research and a lot of luck .One example is a 272 Husqvarna coil to replace the two piece coil on a Partner p-100 .
What would be of help is if somebody came up with something like"Holladers Interchange " but none I know of exists .
I once replaced a faulty points type coil on a Briggs 5 HP on a rototiller that some so called expert said couldn't be done .I did it ,self contained and cheap .You'll never know if you never try .

Another thing many people have no idea it could happen is one of the flywheel magnets loose mgnitism .You can recharge them using a strong rare earth magnet .I had one on an Echo weed eater I had to recharge every spring until it drove me bonkers and I found another flywheel .

The point ignition coil does not have electronics, so it is harder to damage it 😉👍

It must have been a moisture issue because this morning it works. I don't know how long the oven actually stayed on, the coil was still warm this morning but not 185° hot as I left it last night.

The baking information comes from Leon Crouch's House of Homelite; his theory was also that moisture creeps in and the heating dries them out again.

I will continue with this saw and we'll see how long it will stay running.

Really not much to damage in a regular coil, it’s just wire wrapped around a metal and composite core with epoxy. Low heat I don’t see how it could do anything bad to it 180 degrees is nowhere near the temp it would be operating at on a hot sunny day milling or cutting large wood in say Texas ect on a 120 degree day.

I had a similar situation on an electronic ignition module (that's the proper term, not a coil) on an Olympik 254.It had several hairline cracks in it & weak spark.I baked it in a 200 degree oven for 2 hrs.(the recommended time & temp by Leon) & I gave it 2 coatys of marine varnish. That was over 6 yrs.ago & the saw still fires up.

For anyone interested,I've tried those modules that are sopld by LRB,& INO they're overpriced.I can buy a different AM module on eBay for around $33 & they work just as good. Both modules (LRB & eBay) are made in China.Lee from LRB may say they're made in the U.S.,but I know better.

If you ever need one I have a scored 254 and a 251 both that have good spark.
