I also have a question about this mess of 8800 stuff i was given the guy my buddy got them from had a bunch of modded 650's 750's and he was given these cylinders with another modded 8800. Both have the same bore but the muffler mount holes are different on one of them so i wondered if they were actually both from the 8800. One has been ported the other is unmolested...intakes are different shapes and the Transfers and piston skirt sizes and shapes differ as well as thin/thick ring pistons are obvious...he does also have about 30 more if these nos thick rings with the mess...

Those might be 540 cylinders also, the 540 had an early design and a late model right before the 8800 that was redesigned to reduce overheating.

Probably hard to cross reference but here is one of the numbers....

The numbers on the end are usually a revision number, I looked in my service bulletins but I can’t find the 540 cylinder information,

The letters on the end are indeed revisions but normally all the letters interchange with each other. There are a couple of exceptions which were mentioned on the House of Homelite a week or so ago. I don't remember exactly what they were and I cannot find the thread just now. Onlyhomelites, Leon, knows which specific parts would be involved.

Finally got the XL ive been piddling with back in the case yesterday. Fired it up. Runs like crap and smoking heavily. I somehow managed to get the oil pickup line on the impulse fitting, so its feeding itself bar oil. In too much of a hurry. Dont know why I did that, since ive got an IPL and shop manual for it. Maybe I just wanted to take it apart again....:):BangHead:

Anyone interested in trading some me some McCullochs for some Homelites? I have a Super XL 925, a C71, a Super XLAO, a couple of Super2s
All run, some could use some tinkering.
Will trade or sell any or all.

That is sweet lookin man!
Love that red and metallic green.
So I was working on that little cheapo XL I was talking about a few posts back. Got the impulse and pickup lines swapped back the way theyre supposed to go.(because I was too pushed for time and impatient to check it and just guessed by how the old lines "looked like" they went)
Just being cheap, I decided to keep the fuel line(that was still good) and the fuel filter(shoulda known better, felt was brown).
Cleaned with brake parts cleaner and blew out with compressed air. Another mistake(first being not replacing. Why? Impatience. Didnt have one there at the time.)
Anyhow, started it up and started tuning. Almost had it, then it started going lean....and leaner....and you know where this is going. Starving for fuel. Know I'll pull the carb and the inlet will be plugged with brown felt from the filter.
Not too smart sometimes this one. Think id learn by now.
