If your cams are dead on in that pic they are retarded. Does that engine use the cam locking bar in the back of the cams or does it have marks on the cam gears?

It has marks on the gears themselves, they point at each other when lined up. That is what I did last night when I thought it would be better to go retarded, will advance it when I get home.

I'll be doing a TH350 transmission in a few days. I'll post a thread. LOL

Please do. It's the one thing on a vehicle I have never done. The past 4 years or so, I have been into automatics. I used to be manual only guy and looked down on all automatics..... until I drove a vehicle with a properly modified transmission and matching torque converter. It was incredible. I did not know autos could shift that fast and smooth at the same time.

I would also be interested as I've never had one apart before.
I bought a TH350 from a fella that drag races. It's supposed to be a well built transmission.....but they broke one of the dowel locations out of the case. I found a couple of fried transmissions with good cases....so I'll be swapping parts out of the broken case into a good case. I'll probably be installing a shift kit too...as the case might have some mods I'm not aware of related to the shift kit that was used in the race unit. I'm trying to get time to finish building my engine first....but now I'm working on a busted baler in my "free" time. LOL

I am going to be doing a 4l60e. My plan is to spend extra on a good used working transmission and rebuild it on the side with the regular beefed up parts, clutches, and shift kit that folks commonly use to strengthen them up. I thought about buying a core....but I feel like it would be money well spent finding a good used one to start with - instead of a core. I am not confident enough to buy a core.

Or I could get just get a second vehicle and build the working 4l60e that's in the truck now (04 z71 tahoe).

Either way, it's on the list somehwere between a new garage door and finding a two stroke road legal enduro bike from the 70 - 80s to play with

The 4l60 needs a stronger sun gear shell and a few other pieces to make it hold up to power. Theres a lot of good transmission build channels on YouTube. Dig in.

Yes indeed...I would never have even considered tackling it without youtube. I bet I have watched a dozen hours worth of videos on just the 4l60e the past few years.

And, that's a no start. Time to take it apart again and figure out what's not letting it go back in time.

Real quick.

Do you have spark?

Do you have compression?

Answer both of those before you tear it apart.

I drove it on a well earned b-double e-double r-un and it didn't miss a beat. I think there must be something dimensionally off with this motor. The old timing belt and new one are the same in that you can install it slightly advanced or retarded but not dead on. Believe me I tried for hours. I've done many Toyota belts and never seen this happen. I guess if it wants to run advanced I'll just leave it that way.

So, this is as good as I can get it. I wonder if there is something dimensionally wrong like the head or block is slightly too tall. Looks about 5 degrees off to me.

Thanks, will do!

Oops, I meant the cams are retarded as Steve said. This is how it is right now and seems to run just fine.

I've had a few different belts not line up on the marks but I always check before I remove it because I had an experience likes yours years ago. LoL!

Not much wrenching has been going on, but my brother got an '84 Nissan for free from a guy he was swapping work with, it's missing the tranny/t-case but it may be a decent parts truck. He and a neighbor both have 84 Nissans for yard trucks, so it may be put to good use. Also, I installed a K&N intake in my Dodge and got rid of the mouse nest in the original intake.

It never ends. Now my air conditioner and fan don't work, even though I didn't mess with any of that stuff. I can drive it no problem, just got the 255 a/c and can't idle too long.

I have to admit I'm something of a masochist. All of my vehicles are the Rock of Sisyphus. I've had my Ranger since 2004 and it's slow as snot, 2wd, and no a/c from the factory. Strangely it is the best vehicle I've ever had. My sister bought the 626 in 2001 and gave it to me when it needed major repairs. Like the veterinarian who has a bunch of crippled dogs and cats as office pets, I can't help keeping things long past their expiration date.

I like old stuff better. Tractors, balers, cars, trucks, etc.
