For me "Old stuff " means no stinking computers

I like EFI and electronic ignition but nothing beyond that. Hell, I wish you could still get cable operated hvac controls!

The more I think about it, it might be wise to replace the PCM regardless since they don't cost much. This car has had phantom stalls with the clutch disengaged and foot off the gas for years. Before the a/c went kaput, for a week or so it refused to idle with the a/c on. It suddenly lost the command to idle up. I know the IAC is working because it runs at higher rpm until it warms up, and also drops 100 rpm on command when the vehicle comes to a stop. Cleaned the throttle body and IAC, also bumped the throttle stop screw up a bit. I can hear the PCM trying to get the specified idle and it threw a code for idle speed out of range after I adjusted it, which would be expected.

The computers and sensors rarely fail. The mechanical stuff is what always breaks. The problem I have with newer stuff is all the computer override systems or ADAS crap. Damn it, I as the driver told my car what to do. I don't need the cars permission to do it!

I can see a cottage industry springing up to modify and disable ADAS similar to emissions delete on diesels. I've already deactivated many of the alarms and buzzers on our Odyssey.

Problem is the federal government is on top of those diesel delete guys and has fined may of them substantial amounts. I'm sure soon they will start coming after the consumer too for purchasing the delete.

I definitely wouldn't delete an ADAS program due to liability in case of an accident. A sure fire way to give someone else your house! LoL!

Way easier and safer (legally I believe) to just be happy driving older stuff.

Hey Lance, did you do the cylinder deactivation delete on your Odyssey? Did it stop using oil?

I did the cylinder deactivation delete via unplugging the two connectors. Our oil consumption was due to leaks more than anything else, which have been fixed. It runs good so far.

My brother bought a delete kit last week for his 2010. We'll see how it goes.

Sweet! Where did he buy it at? Once in a great while ours does the random/multiple cylinder misfire thing for a few minutes and then straightens out on it's own. We only drive it on the weekends so I don't worry about it.

I'm not sure but I'll find out and let you know after we make sure it actually works.

Spent some time working on my oldest running vehicle
1952 Power Glide
Its nice to work on something older than me.
I bought it a few years ago,a previous owner was restoring it when he ran out of time. A couple more stops before it crossed my path and i bought it.
Engine was rebuilt, new front end parts, new brakes, even the park brake worked.
Last year i got it going the gas tank had been dented by a forklift at one of its stops. I got the dents out soldered up the leaks.
Today i got a bunch of electrical stuff fixed.
Turn signals, starter button, horn.
I was able to make a good starter switch out of two. And i was able to repair the horn solenoid with a solder job.
Everything was built to be repaired back then.fiddy two.jpghorn relay.jpgstarter switch.jpg

As to my little Mazda 626 which has lost A/C control. I'm about 95% sure it needs a pcm, but need to do alot more research before I pull the trigger. It doesn't help that my problem solving skills have degraded into frozen molasses. Right now I'm going to button her back up and drive it so I can fix other things, like finally correcting the leaky injector pump on the Fergie 165. What's funny is, this is the first car I've ever owned in my life that actually has good functional A/C. All my previous ones had dead R12 systems or didn't have it from the factory. So, I'm used to sweating it out with 255 air conditioning!

Let me look at the diagrams when I get to work tomorrow and I'll walk you through it. Make sure we don't needlessly replace stuff.
