Just cleaned up battle wagon, removed box and painted, undercoated with wool wax, new rear bumper, new tail lights. Took me 4 days and I am getting old.9FB657E3-9269-40AD-B7D5-1D2C8015B189.jpeg851D3CBE-23B8-49AB-94CE-E548082E8287.jpeg

I bought a old spread bore Holley off of Ebay recently. It turned out to be a Frankencarb.

4165/6210 carb was a 650 cfm double pumper q-jet replacement carb. That carb came equipped with a single inlet that matches the q-jet's location. It also has side hung float bowls.

The 4175/6213 was a 800 cfm double pumper, dual inlet with center hung bowls.

I was hoping that someone used the 6213 bowls on this carb....but that wasn't the case. They used the bowls from a 4150.

The accelerator pump passages are in a different location on the spread bore carbs, so the 4150 bowls don't line up, and dump the pump shot back into the bowl. I imagine that the person who bolted this thing together initially was frustrated. LOL

Holley did make a kit years ago to convert the carb....but its NLA. So I spent a few days thinking about it, and decided to make a couple of brass plugs to plug, and relocate the passages.

After a nice bath, and a kit.

So, I'm going back together on my 1998 Mazda 626 4 banger and installing the new timing belt. I've done it several times before and I swear the belt is half a tooth short no matter where it comes from: OEM, Gates, Napa, etc. So I put a new belt on it today and it looks like my choices for cam timing are half a tooth advanced or half retarded (like the guy doing the job!) I verified that the crank pointer is in fact at TDC. I figgered slightly retarded was safer than slightly advanced so I guess I'll go with that, unless anybody else can think of a better idea. Of course I didn't make a note of the timing before I took the belt off 'cause I'm a complete idiot. **embarrassed**

Id go advanced. Once the belt wears in and slightly stretches then it will be in perfect time.

Lol. I hope it runs when I'm done. It started making the ticking noise at 140k. Time for new phasers, oil pump rockers cams etc.. None of the old parts looked too bad. Fun putting all of those damn rockers back in.

So, this is as good as I can get it. I wonder if there is something dimensionally wrong like the head or block is slightly too tall. Looks about 5 degrees off to me.

Thanks, will do!

If your cams are dead on in that pic they are retarded. Does that engine use the cam locking bar in the back of the cams or does it have marks on the cam gears?

Speaking of 3v....

I bought a 2008 Mustang Bullitt for dirt cheap back in 2016. It had 220k miles on it. I put another 20k hard miles on it until the camshafts ate into the support journals and sent the oil filter to bypass and filled the engine with aluminum. It sat for two years before I worked up the motivation to swap a junkyard 3v into it. The engine was freighted to me from an LKQ junkyard in Florida, I swapped it out, and when I fired it up it was loping like it had some wicked camshafts in it.

I spent a whole gd week trying to diagnose why my new to me junkyard motor was missing. Then I got the bright idea to actually pull the valve covers off (DUH!). Il be damned, it actually had a set of comp camps in it..I still can't believe it to this day. I had to spend some money to tune it, but it was a fun accident/ surprise.

I sold the car a few months later after I spun it out going 60mph (no damage except my pride) and decided to try and grow up a little.
