Foam filter? Or leave it with the stock filter? MMWSms462

Getting a 462 built by Randy. I'm planning on 24"-28" bar size, it's all hardwood about 80% green. Is a foam filter any better than stock if it's not tons of fines? What are you all running on your ported saws? How's @Mastermind feeling?

Welcome to the Forum!! I only have one saw that is running a foam filter, only because the originals are no longer made and there are no aftermarket filters available. Well used and beat up ones show up on eBay but people ask $100 for them so I opted to put a foam filter on the saw. Lots of people here are running foam filters and have posted results. I think if you keep the foam filter well oiled (properly maintained) and clean then it should work well, it should also be less restrictive on air and give the carb more to work with.

The max flow filters work great on the 1128 series of saws, much better than the HDs.

I'm using the oem filter on my ported 462 for now. From what I've read the 500i's factory filter setup seems to have issues with sealing/keeping fines out. I haven't read of such with the 462..

Fines are scared of Randy's saws....shouldn't be a problem.

I like the Egan filters, will likely get one of those soon. And hopefully if Randy's work isn't too bad I'll get big fat chips...

With air injection I wouldn’t think it would really be necessary. The two-piece cover saws benefit from it because there’s no air injection to keep the chips out.

Foam is still a benefit because of how long it will go between cleanings. On saws like the 044, 066, 661 and 500, the stock air filter should probably be tapped and blown out once a day where the 462 probably needs it once a week

Stock paper filter with an Outerwears cover is a nice combination that stays clean while working and lasts a long, long time. While the foam does catch everything exceptionally well, it also gets harder and harder to clean the trapped fines out from inside. So, it comes down to what your usage/maintenance regimen is like to what is suited best for each user.

The stock 462 filter works really well, and it’s certainly not worth oiling and cleaning a foam filter. Especially if you’re not cutting in really dusty or nasty conditions.

Air filters are air filters, IMO. For my saws, Stihl runs the same air filter from the 044 to the MS880 so I figure the HD2 cartridge will let plenty of air in for my 441 and 460. If I ever get into softwood fire kill or something where there’s a ton of fines I’ll swap the 1128s to a MaxFlow and my 441 will still be fine.

20-1114 is for a 462, snug fit...but perfect.

I wash the filters and outerwears every few weeks in dish soap, if you wash the outerwears in your hands they look brand new.
