I like full comp on the long bars with chisel in 3/8 or 404. Long for me starts at 32"-40" bars. I do use skip but prefer full comp full chisel round or square file. Square is smoother because it requires less bite at the drags imo.
I do use full skip in semi and full chisel.
Just set up my 260 yesterday with 3/8 20" full chisel full skip round filed for trimming log ends and bumps for the mill run I'm about to go do.
The mill will be on 28" RS 404 for the first run. Round two will be a test run with 3/8" 50 114dl on a 36" WN ES bar. Round three is 40" 404 RS ground round filed square.

Ifn' I see problems out comes the Oregon 16H full skip round ground. Those loops are already missing a few cutters from rocks, glass, horseshoes and big nails. That *s-wordz goes right through 16 penny nails....rebar, not so much. Sand....lol tears it up bad but it comes right back to life with a quick touch up on the grinder. Try that with regular round chisel Oregon chain and you'll wish you didn't!

Don’t forget that full chiz dulls quicker in dirty wood. And is a damn sight harder to get a good cutter back from hitting dirt. I like chisel chain but for everyday I will stick to semi chisel.

I think that if you are using your saws in wood that is larger than the norm for the size of your saw, semi chisel is the way to go. Full chisel is going to make the engine work harder and just cause more wear on everything in general. For example, i can feel and see a difference between Oregon 91VXL and PXL on my Echo CS-400 and 20LPX and 20BPX on my Husky 440 cutting 8-10" Locust. The semi chisel PXL and BPX just works better for this application. Stays sharp waaayyy longer too. Planning to switch my 50 cc to semi chisel as well.

A little birdie told me to go with a 28" Tsumura, .404 Full Skip chain, and 8 tooth sprocket. Anyone care to confirm this? My hands go numb after the first few teeth of filing, so half the teeth to file sounds really go to me.

I guess I don't understand what full skip means. I thought it meant every other cutter was removed. Can you elaborate on this?

OK, so based on that picture, an extra drive link is added between every cutter. So that would mean cutters are reduced by 33% right? Couple that with the transition from 3/8 to .404 and that would net a 40% total reduction in cutters from 3/8 full comp, which I was running, to .404 full skip. Is that correct?

Much ado about chains .It takes all of 5 minutes to touch up a standard 72 driver 20" loop with a file .Usually that's about 2 tanks full fuel unless the wood is dry as a bone .On a stock 70 cc saw that would be around 35-45 minutes of running time per tank ,less if it been souped .If you wait until it's dull it just takes longer to get it back in shape so it cuts right .
The only saws I have semi or actual chipper is on the really old vintage saws the rest are round chisel including my 2 Stihl 200T trim saws .It's an option through just like oil ratios or brands of chain saws .My two cents worth .

A saw that will start right up.
One that will idle when set down while doing stuff.
Sharp chain. Chain that can be found local to buy easily.
Most seem to be 50cc-71cc for firewood cutting. Just a few guys running the 90cc+ saws
