I build saws with high compression. Too little oil, and they die.

I had a customer run an 088 that I did on Amsoil @ 80:1.....

The rod bearing melted.
I understand what your saying, I'm just saying what I've experienced. 2 guys I know that run it 80:1 for close to ten years now and run their outdoor wood boilers 9 months a year . I believe the one saw is a ms291 and other 066. Another guy works in the woods full time too.
Their Is a saw builder in Vermont that runs it 60:1 in all his ported saws. Maybe the guy your referencing was using some bad gas or he tweaked his carb too lean? Not saying it didn't happen from that just telling my experience. I know you have a much more extensive knowledge on saws then I do .

I have a few guy running it at 50:1.

But damn, just think of what a tiny amount of oil that is.......

It is a clean oil though......even at 40:1..

I agree it doesn't seem like much. I know the higher flash point leaves more oil to lubricate. I called Amsoil 5 years ago and asked about running it so lean. They told me in their testing they ran it 300:1 ! That's way to lean. They flat out tell you not to run to rich because the hard deposits it could leave. They said it's designed to run leaner but do say you can follow the manufacturer recommend ratio.

Different oils do behave differently though. An AS Member did extensive testing on several oils. Belray H1R actually slowed down the M/T and A/T saws.
I run H1/R. It smells good. 40:1
