That's a huge wood score! If I'd have seen your post earlier, I'd have offered to make a few buck cuts with my 42. It's really nice to be able to get through with one cut.

Very nice looking Jeff!
If you would like to bring the 42 by let me know. I'll start on the top and leave the trunk for later.

White oak crotch.

Here are some more action shots.

Ash rounds. All split in place as they lay. Never bent over. Took 18 minutes start to finish. View attachment 213594 View attachment 213592
Great job there.
How long does red oak take to season in your area?
I've got a bit that was split about 2-3 months ago and it is some loud smelling wood!
But, I've noticed that after about 4-6 months of being split it looses most of the offensive order.

Ideally 2+ years. I've burned a fair amount after less time than that, but I was splitting that stuff pretty small to try to get it as dry as possible in a year. Even if bucked into rounds, it holds its moisture, for years even. Doesn't start to dry out until it's split.

A few of my buds around here who buy firewood are running into a bunch of guys selling green, 1-3 month old firewood being advertised as "Seasoned" and of course its not.
I'm buying a decent moisture meter to be more accurate myself.
Do any of you guys use moisture meters?
Here are some of the pics they were sent that was supposedly seasoned.
BTW...many sellers wouldn't respond when asked how long was it seasoned & when it was split!

The wood is seasoned when the bark comes off easily on most split pieces and when both ends show cracks that nearly meet in the middle.
That is my tell.

Turkey oak needs at least two years to season split and stacked in an open space, it will not dry sitting in rounds or log form nor will it dry having been tossed into the shed fresh.

Fresh green beech needs a year or so.
Beech logs that were felled and left sitting so they already loose some of their bark need some six months.

Beech dries much faster than turkey oak.
Turkey oak is the far superior firewood compared to beech and ash once seasoned.

Most pleasant smelling to me is ash followed by beech.
Turkey oak smells extremely sour, like cat piss - the smell is also a tell for it being seasoned, it reduces and disappears eventually.

I considered getting a meter off eBay, but once I get this last load of logs bucked and split I should be no less than two winters ahead.

At this point I just need to process one truck load of logs a year to keep the pace and not worry about moist.

Nice work James.
Thank you sir. Never had to deal with a root ball that size befor. Knew it would stand up but was very careful dealing with that kind of weight. Stopped a few times as I heard it start to pop. Spent 10 minutes listening to it pop and crack befor it finaly let go. Fine with me as it let me step back to a safe distance.

Seasoned would mean the barks starting to fall off anything in those pic to me.

I'm sure it won't get done today. But I'll start on it this evening. Going to take a lot of fiskering to turn that one to firewood.
If’n you struggle with the 32 gimme a holler. With the daylight so short, I’m puttin’ in as much time as I can on my own pile.

I’m replenishing as I take from.

Scored some locust, red oak and a little sugar maple off this huge pile that has been there two years. Spotted some black walnut, white oak and hard white maple off to the sides. Rounds range up to five foot across by two long or less. It is ten minutes away all freeway driving.... nine miles :)
Plenty more wet wood and honey locust. The black walnut is soaked but solid and colored. The big maple and white oak bases will be welcome wood for seasoning.

Skells around here call it seasoned after one season out of four....hacks and liars! 175-250 per cord now. I still have folks calling for wood after many years of not selling it. They beg for dry oak.
