The majority of that pile was split with a gransfors bruk maul. I have a splitter hiding in the container behind the pile, but I only use it on the gnarly pieces. Anything decent I can get split much faster swinging the maul. Give me a big round of red oak most people don't care for. As long as it is not right in the crotch I can pop piece after piece of with the maul. So quick and so rewarding. I really just much prefer not burning the fuel, with my head right next to the engine, breathing the exhaust. Personal preference.
Heck yeah. I like good hard physical labor, and I split with my fiscars on a normal basis, but I don't do it for hrs on end or the wood would win lol.
I know what you mean, sometimes I grab a little unmodified saw to cut with and just take my time without the noise, sometimes lol.
You could put an extension on the muffler is it's blowing right at you, that or 90 to turn it away.
What kind of hydro do you have.

Just a little Husky or Huskee, however they spell it. I got for a steal with a lot of machinists tools I bought. Basically bought the tools at a good price and the splitter was free! From the same guy who owns the tree service. He already had one just like it. The exhaust doesn't blow right at me, but it is there and doesn't have the sweet smell of 2 stroke ;)

Add a couple oz of maxima in there to sweeten things up a bit :).

I got my disaster organized finally, after a couple afternoons of dealing with it. When I do tree jobs, I tend to take shortcuts at the property I'm working at, to get off of it as fast as possible. So when I take down the trees I leave everything in 8-10 ft logs and haul it away with a forklift and deal with it on my own property. That usually means, if I'm on a job, more than a couple days in a row, I end up with a log jam at my place. Lol! So it takes me some time to get everything sorted out and organized.

The small pile is all Cedar and the pile is 9'-ish wide and 4'-ish tall for reference. The big pile, is about 13'-ish wide and 7'-ish tall at the peak. The tree I just took down, was about 60' tall, not a very wide crown, maybe 30-40 ', but had 3 main leaders that were all of a 28" bar at the bottoms. You can see a couple of them in the second picture. The trunk, is still in the ground, and is about 3 1/2 -4' diameter and about 8' tall yet. I think it is Elm, but y'all can tell me if that's right. We really only have a couple tree types around the towns out here, Locust and Elm.

I have no idea how many cords this will produce, but it's alot! Lol! This is the biggest job I've ever done, and this was the biggest tree I've ever taken down. I did have help from a payloader, to help make sure the leaders went where we wanted them, because they were all leaning pretty good and there was a fire hydrant, and power lines to worry about. So I cut them up, he pushed them off the trunk. Took a bit of the risk out of it, even if it was "cheating" a little bit. I'd rather be safe than sorry!

I am quite lucky this year. My friend has so graciously allowed me to occupy this little corner of his tree service lot. Brings the logs I cherry pick out of the pile over with his skid steer and lets me do my thing. Come delivery time he'll let me use one of his dumps and help get me loaded and on my way. In return I help him out on his big job or getting ready when his actual employees are routinely late. Do as much maintenance as I can around the place and help keep an eye on things. One hand washes the other...

Sweet deal. I'd like to find a similar arrangement. Also, those GB mauls sure are sweet in the hands. I like the Fiskars too, but the GB is the best. IMG_20170125_120213756_compress57.jpg

I bought a fiskars x27 to use while my GB handle was broken and waiting on a replacement. The fiskars splits alright too, but I sure was happy when that handle finally arrived, because it is so much better. Worth every penny!

Have you tried the GB Splitting AX Rob?
Super nice.
I just wish the handles were a bit longer.
I have both GB Splitting Maul and Ax...
They hit real hard...
I have Fiskars X27 also...
I use them all...

I have not. I thought I was really going to want one to accompany my maul as I was used to splitting with a lighter weight regular axe before I got my GB maul. The maul is just light enough I didn't feel the need after having it for a while. I was a bit disappointed with the length of the handle when I first got it. I was used to longer, but have since gotten used to it. My x27 hasn't been touched much since I got the maul back in action. Keep it around as a backup/loaner/drag through the mud if I need to tool.

Nice Rob. I bought the splitting ax first. Loved it. A deal came up for the splitting maul that I couldn't pass up.
My only regret is that I didn't come across these GB tools 25 years ago. [emoji106]

Only thing where GB missed the boat is by not forging the Poll.
I'd check out Council Tool Flying Fox for a kindling Ax and wedge banger. They have hardened polls and are much cheaper.

View attachment 213391 View attachment 213392 The woods presented me with this monster white oak as a birthday present Saturday. Might see if I can get some of the local guys to bring there 90+cc saws and lend a hand. If not I'm going to put a 32 on the 7910 and let her eat.

View attachment 214003 No more threats lol headed up the road now.
That's a huge wood score! If I'd have seen your post earlier, I'd have offered to make a few buck cuts with my 42. It's really nice to be able to get through with one cut.
