This will be thread for me to ask questions about and give updates on rebuilding my Kohler 7hp k161 engine with my dad for my IH Cub cadet 70 garden tractor from the early 60s. It's back from the shop. Figured the first thing I can do while it's apart is replace the governor, since everyone else told me the nylon fails and it is a preventative maintenance thing in a way. Paid $40 for new Kohler governor. But it looks like there a metal governor in the engine right now... Now I'm told that it should just need to be adjusted per instructions in the manual I have and bring out of adjustment could be the reason it was always running at super high rpm. So that will be the next step one of these nights this week likely. This is my first ever engine rebuild, so I have no prior experience this deep in a motor, so I'm kinda lost. My dad has done a rebuild years ago tho so he knows a few things and we do have the manual for the motor and the tractor. We have to cut/trim the valve tips in order to make for adequate clearance I know. If anyone has any pointers or has done a rebuild like this before please give me any info you have as to in what order I reassemble it and any tips you may have.
