Hauling home a bunch of crappy firewood. Boxelder, cedar, cottonwood and a couple pieces of ash mixed in. Trailer holds around 2.5 cord when it’s piled on and heaped up. Second load of the day with two to go.

Two of the loads were full of all kinds of bark and other dirt and general crud so I dumped them into a concrete patch in a shed to sort it all out.

I saw a video of a commercial firewood cutter processor deal that had a trommel style bark cleaner and I thought to myself “Self, I have a rock picker deal for the skiddy that looks just like that !” It worked very very well to scoop some wood in, give it a few spins and watch the bark and crud fly out. No one likes dirty wood 😆

In my book it all burns once dry.

I don't care if I need to feed more into the fire to keep it going as long as I didn't have to pay premium for it.

I agree. It all burns. I have access to more wood than I’ll ever burn but it’s all low quality stuff growing on fence lines and in pastures that need cleaning up. Other than the equipment to move it around my only cost for firewood is saw gas, diesel and time.

If I had to estimate I’d say I have 2+yrs of wood on hand. Likely more. When it’s -20f and windy I’ll go through a cord a week when burning this cruddy stuff. I’m 38 so not old but not a young buck anymore, or at least I don’t feel like it lately. I like cutting/burning wood as it keeps me active and forces me to use muscles I likely wouldn’t otherwise. Plus I like playing with chainsaws :ARMS1:

Here’s the main pile by my place.
IMG_1999.jpeg

Same pile, different angle. The larger stuff on the right is a pile around 40’ deep. The main pile is around 80’ deep. No idea on how to estimate cords with everything being so varied but I’d guess 40-50+.
IMG_2001.jpeg

Another 5-6 cord on this pile and it should last the winter. Last winter was mild and I went through 18 cord. The winter before was pretty stinking cold with a couple week long stretches of highs in the -10f area and lows around -25f and this pile had about a cord left on it. There will be 25-27 cord on the pad when it’s full with a mix of stacked and piled.

40-something began to be the tipping point for me.
At 45 I called it, said "I am to old for this $#!t!" and started refusing to buck other people's firewood logs.

I estimate to have firewood for 3-4 seasons, and I am supposed to receive another 2 winters worth.
There is mixed crappy firewood behind me, and yesterday I finished carting in the remainder of the wood seen on the ground in front.

It's all cruddy wood like boxelder, cottonwood, soft elm, poplar with a little birch and some ash mixed in. I don't think in the last 3yrs that I've fed it a single piece of oak or hard maple or any wood that was actually decent. Two winters ago I purchased two ton of coal and fed the stove around half of it mixing it in at night with the wood. Last winter I didn't use much as it was only below zero a few times for a few weeks. This pile is 24x24x5ish and the two rows closest to us were left with the three baskets touching those two rows. There is around 3.5-4 cord in those two rows and the entire pile should hold around that 23 cord area if it's stacked 5' high on average.

2023-12-01 08.25.13.JPG

The first winter I had the stove it got to -35f overnight a few times. You best make sure you're bundled up for that crap. Luckily that isn't that common and usually only lasts a few days that cold. When it's -20f and windy the stove cycles about once an hour, burn for 30min, rest for 30min and repeat. Not bad for crappy wood heating almost 10,000sq/ft !!

My son and I went out and cut down and blocked up 2 dead standing oak trees this morning. I used my XS 400c and he used my scarr 4350 for the tops. We blocked everything to 26" for a owb. We also got a pickup load for my cabin of the wood that I cut yesterday.

Short day today - neighbour got done harvesting his canola yesterday so I could get back on his farmland to access some forest a little further downriver. Pulled out maybe 1/3 cord nice ash plus a little bit of oak from blow-downs. Couple big trees down in there - I'll pick away at it over the next while & hopefully have half-a-dozen cords or so ready for winter.

I got a little this morning. The thorns and rocks sucked but I managed to cut up 4 blowovers this morning. I used my scarr 4350, Tree Monkey 400c and my XS 400c. I blocked everything at 26" for a owb.

I hauled up and spit some firewood for my cabin today. I normally just show pics of me cutting trees on this thread. Here's the finished product. Cut, hauled and split. I have three 40ft rows, four 8ft rows, and two sixteen rows by my campfire.
