I was building these racks in my greenhouse this winter where we could be out of the weather. Filled them up in the driveway and lately I've been them down to the sugarbush where we'll burn them either in the spring of '25 or '26. View attachment 417527

My buddy Cory recently bought a used skid loader from my neighbor. He parked it here before he hauls it to his folks' old dairy farm so he can get used to running it (hardly ever used one before). So, since it was here we made use of it to unload and line up some racks. View attachment 417528

Currently I have 18 of these racks full and ready for next season and about 12 left to fill. I figure they're about 40% of a full cord each. Ideally we mix splits with slab wood for the best burn in the evaporator.

Actually, when we went over to test drive it I told Cory that if he didn't buy it, I was going to. And I wasn't kidding. My neighbor Tim gave him a great deal on it with the bucket, grapple, forks, tire chains, and some over-the-tire steel tracks. I certainly don't NEED a skid loader, but I wasn't gonna let that deal get past me. But, like your arrangement with Rusty, I think this skid steer will be available to me if I ever need it.

This is just one of about 6 pieces the neighbor gave me. If I was him, I would've have sold this log to a sawmill instead of bucking it up, but he just wanted it out of his yard. It was about 20ft strait before the limbs started. This portion was right at the split. I'll have pictures of the base next weekend.

Dang nice day outside today. I got some wood cut with my new log bench setup. Works quite slick !



Bring them to the stove and cut them while they’re in the air. Almost as easy as calling the LP guy and having him fill the tank.

Cute little 3/4 cord’ish cut up today. Another 26 sessions of this and I have enough for the winter ready to go. Actually I have probably 10 cord cut up already, just need to get it to the boiler pad !

I’ve actually found the opposite. My 044 has soaked my leg or coated my boots from forgetting to snug that f’in screw cap way too much to buy another 044, 046 etc

If that 044 is a PITA I’d happily pay shipping to get it off your hands

I don’t remember a time when the screw cap saws soaked my leg or did anything but leak a bit from a dried out o-ring. The oil cap on that 250 has to have something wrong with it as I can have it locked in, pull on it without coming loose but as soon as I go to start the saw it decides to behave like a college freshman and it and pukes everywhere.

If it was before I got it ported I gladly would have pawned it off. Cut exactly like my 400
I had flip cap stihls before screw so that’s probably why I prefer them?
I used to run a pole saw that I think got overtightened too much or something because it would do the same thing, feel tight but then doing a cut it’d dump a tank down your front the odd time and it was a screw cap

I’ve been kicking this idea around in my head for a while now and got some beams, uprights and decking to make it happen. Still need a piece of something (likely junk 3/4” iron pipe) to keep them from spreading but soon they’ll be filled with close to a cord of fire wood each. I’m planning on welding the beams to the uprights and securing the decking somehow. Still gotta get another beam to cut up and put under as pallet fork pockets. Then make 30 more lol

Depending upon where you're gonna be sitting those you may wanna put some bigger feet on 'em because on grass or anything less than very hard ground like rock or asphalt the weight of the wood is gonna force those feet right into the ground and then you'll not have any airflow underneath. But I definitely like the idea, sure beats pallets.

They likely won’t be sitting on dirt when they’re full. I plan to keep them on the concrete stove pad all summer and once it looks like snow I’ll bring them in a shed and stack them three high. Two high for sure but I have height for three. We’ll see how sketchy it is with two first lol.

I put sides, stacking guides and fork pockets on them today. I have around 1-1/2hrs each in them so far but future ones will be lots faster as these two took some head scratching and material scrounging.


Stacking guides on each inner corner of just one of them for now. I’m thinking they’ll spread a bit when full and this will help pull them together when stacked. If not I’ll add more bracing.

Well. As a proof of concept they work great. Filled it up and of course the lawnmower in the corner of the pic wanted nothing to do with it. Most of that cut up pile fit in the one basket. At around a cord I’ll need 20x that for next winter. I thought there was more cut up in the pile already


I grabbed the S300 skiddy and shoved the forks in and it was a bit bucky about it. Should be around a cord in here (4’x8’x4’ish). Bob the skiddy gets tippy around 5,200lbs and flat out falls on his face just shy of 6,000lbs. I didn’t pitch forward but it was dang light in the rear moving it over here. Also, the pallet racking beams are too thin inside to allow the forks to go in without getting bully. Gotta find something else because there is no way the thick forks on my forklift will get in them and that’s what I’d use to stack them 3 high in the shed. All in all it’s a success though. I can bring my skiddy and two of these to the woods and bring two cord home cut up and ready to pitch in the stove without touching it again. I like that !!
